More Darkling! Yay!!
Leigh Bardugo’s The Demon in the Wood was far shorter than I thought it would be, but at the same time it was still a delightful read! The Darkling is one of those villains that you love. Not love to hate necessarily, although I can’t really recall all my feelings towards him as I binge read The Shadow and Bone trilogy almost three years ago! So yeah, memory not so hot, but I do remember loving the Darkling. This is a short little story of him as a kid. It’s a little heart-wrenching too in some ways. He and his mother moved around a lot because of what they were. It’s never safe for them if anyone were to know. And so begins a new life for them in this little village. Just as Eryk, his new name for this village, finds himself making new friends, he’s also making enemies. The ending was what really tears at your heart. Knowing who the Darkling is and what his fate ended up being, can give you mixed feelings. But here, he is still just a boy. A boy who wants to fit in somewhere. I think anyone can relate to that. And what happens to him really makes you feel for the poor boy!A quick and slightly emotional read, but a fun one! If you’ve ever loved the Darkling—and who hasn’t at some point?—this will definitely be a little story you’ll want to check out!Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars—would’ve loved for more on the aftermath of things, but it is what it is!

More Darkling!
Note: Grisha trylogy spoilers ahead!!!Fear is a powerful ally, but feed it too often, make it too strong, and it will turn on you.The Darkling remains the best thing in the Grisha trylogy. And I have a bone to pick with Bardugo for the ending she reserved for him.Oh, and don't get me started on those two peasants!Back to the story, it's truly short and it depicts perfectly an amplifier's lifestyle. I was hopeful at first, but when the cards were laid on the table, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had to go back a page, to make sure I understood what I was reading. Then again, Eryk's story is a good allegory for everyday life, too: you think you know what's right in front of you, but you don't.Bottom line is, just read it. It's worth it.

Flawless! Fans of the Grisha series, READ THIS NOW!!!
Yes, The Demon in the Wood is too short. But, it could be 1,000 pages and it still wouldn't be enough for me. Leigh Bardugo forever has a place in my heart simply because she created Aleksander Morozova aka The Darkling. He's one of the most fascinating characters and I instantly connected with him, even though he is the antagonist. I just loved him so so much! This novella is perfection. I loved the tiny glimpse into the painful childhood of The Darkling and his relationship with Baghra. While it doesn't spoil the plot of the series in any way, this book most definitely adds to the overall story and made me sympathize with Aleksander even more. It made me second guess my assumptions from the three main books. The writing is flawless. The characters are thoroughly developed. I'm very impressed that Ms. Bardugo was able to covey such emotion and depth in so few pages. Fans of the Grisha series, READ THIS!!!If you've never heard of the Grisha series, start here: Shadow and Bone (The Grisha Book 1) .

The Demon in the Wood: A Great, But Too Quick Read
The Demon in the Wood captures the spirit of the Grisha books but shows her maturing skills as a writer, meaning she's gotten even better. This short story is about the humble beginnings of the Darkling. Readers know it's a short story going in, but you're still left wanting more anyway! She is not planning on expanding this storyline, at least not any time soon, which I get, but it's still a little disappointing. That's why I gave the four star rating.Last week, at the invitation of my daughter, who is an uber-fan, I got to hear Ms. Bardugo in person as she tours for her new book, A Six of Crows. She is a lot of fun to listen to, very approachable, very down-to-earth, amd very gracious, despite some health issues, and even when faced with a mob of her adoring, and sometimes annoying, fans and their questions. If you ever get the chance to see Ms. Bardugo on a book tour or at a writer's convention, go and listen to her. You'll be glad you did.

Worth Reading
Seeing the Darkling’s childhood in this short story made him a more sympathetic character. I was surprised that I felt bad for him! I thought The Demon in the Wood was worth reading. It fleshed out the idea of amplifiers and showed the greed that they can cause. My favorite quote:Fear is a powerful ally, but feed it too often, make it too strong, and it will turn on you.-Leigh Bardugo, The Demon in the Wood

This Is So Tragic
Here is the tragic prequel that gives us a glimpse of the Darkling and his mother's life. They travel from place to place trying to find a safe haven that for them just doesn't exist. It's a heartbreaking tale. If you didn't feel sympathy for these two before, perhaps this will change your mind. I adore Leigh Bardugo and her words!

The Darkling

A treat to read this author
This author can tell a story. She has a talent for drawing one into her tale and keeping the interest in the telling right to the end. Never saw the twist coming at the conclusion, and it left me thinking it over! She has such a flair for writing clearly and compellingly
