Corgi The Memory Wood: the chilling, bestselling Richard & Judy book club pick – this winter’s must-read thriller

Does not quite sustain what it promises.
The idea on which the plot of this novel is based is certainly not original. Close connections between captured and abductor feature in a number of thrillers. Nonetheless, there is something distinctive about this book , which sets it apart. It's well written, especially the early sections. It's probably heresy to say so but the suspense as to whether Elissa will win the chess championship almost overrides the drama which follows. Although Mairead, the detective in charge of the investigation, is more original than her many counterparts in other books, in the end, the police activity degenerates into something overdramatic and cliched. The book is an interesting psychological account with a genuine twist at the end. It is not difficult to find the central male character credible, but the girl becomes increasingly idealised, to an extent where it becomes difficult to suspend disbelief. The first half of the novel is a strong 4 but as melodrama intrudes the story weakens and also the exchanges between the central characters become repetitive. I would not wish to put off anyone from reading this book; I realise that many see qualities that elude me.

Fantastic!
I bought this book based on the cover. I know, "never judge a book" and all that but I am so glad I did. I read the 1st page when I got into bed last night and by this afternoon I'd finished the book (didn't get much sleep). I loved the characters, the twists and the fast pace. Some of the story is horrific but you are completely sucked in you have to keep reading. I look forward to reading more from this talented author!

Just read it!
Thoroughly enjoyed this gripping debut thriller by Sam Lloyd. It is a well paced, compulsive read with some interesting twists. When I finished it I wanted to go right back to the beginning and start over. Instead I put my husband onto reading it.The story is told through the eyes of 3 main characters and the story is set out well. If I’m being critical ... it’s a bit confusing when you are going back in time at various stages with two of the characters. And though the perspective is supposed to be that of child’s mind (age 12) the language and text is overly mature which makes it less believable and convincing. But it is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I will be watching out for the author’s next novel.
