Can you replace rear fan with quiet aftermarket?

I went as far as to buy a 80 mm to 120 mm adapter and stick an ultra quiet 120 mm fan. The result is exactly what I wanted -- quiet running, more air drawn over the drives, and cooler drives.

Is trayless or ones with trays better for minimizing rattles and vibration?

I can't answer the vibration or rattle comparison, but I have had this unit since Oct. 2014, and have had no issues with the unit or hard drives going bad? I am using in a home server running 24/7. I bought it in case I needed to swap drives, but i haven't had to yet...

Does this work with 6tb western digital red hard drives?

works with any SATA or SAS hard drive (obviously you must connect the drive bay to a Sata or Sas controller). We use western digital RE drives and one thing you need to be aware, once you insert the drive, you need to open the door slightly and push drive firmly unto the backplane with your thumb, then reclose the door. This ensures a square and fully inserted drive onto the backplane.

Do i need a separate power supply cable?

Yes, you can run one cable from the PSU peripheral to the cage. But be ware, do not daisy chain more than one cage (if you buy more than one). Each drive can consume up to 10-12 Watts depending on your drive, and say another 2 watts for the fan itself, and you are getting close to the 56 Watt limit for a line on the PSU/SATA spec.
