Keeps the pests away without any casualties. But with limits apparently
I have a shed on the side of my home that a local feral cat has decided to make the roof of the shed as its personal litter box. Being the roof of the shed is flat, it quickly became a dumping ground filled with a lot of dried poop. One, its very unslightly, two, its potentially a bio-hazard, and three, leaving it there only continues to encourage the cat to keep using it in this manner.Since this seems to occur during the night, I have yet to see or catch this cat in the act, even though I have chased it away from my backyard and its attempt to enter my garage when I open the door, this have not discouraged this cat from visiting.Looking at various options, some that would outrage animal rights folks ( I would gladly offer to humanely capture this cat and give it to a person who will take care of it) it came down to discouragement approach. Cat deterrent oils? They don't work. Get a dog? That's not helping the situation. Ultrasonic noise makers? Those don't work. Automatic water sprayer system? Too involved. So bottom line, this solution works, at least for the week that I have had it installed on top of my shed. No cat poop. No cats laying on the ground from stepping on it. So humane, probably.CONS? Cost is kind of high in my opinion for what it is. The mat comes rolled up in a plastic bag package. This makes trying to straighten out the mat on the inside edge difficult. I left it out in the sun with some rocks on it and it still curls.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -UPDATE: Well, I was hoping this would do the trick but it looks like the neighborhood pest is back and still using the top of my shed as it's personal littler box. Too bad, I had high hopes for this. I guess feral cats are tough and perhaps the spikes aren't enough of a deterrent for an animal with hardened foot pads unlike a pet that lives part of its life indoors.

Use gravel ground cover instead, cheaper and permanently effective.
Pretty expensive for not a whole lot of coverage. Tried stapling the ends to wood 1” X 1”s to hold the mat ends down and connect the pieces, but this is so brittle that it snaps. It probably works ok if you have small areas to cover, but if you even leave a small space in between sections, the dang cats pooped in between. Must be overlayed or secured end to end to be completely effective. (We have nightmare neighbor’s cats who can apparently poop balanced on one leg) If this was made of thicker gauge plastic, it would work, but I now have almost $100 worth of this stuff which keeps rolling up upon itself unless you stake each section down. Don’t walk on it, it will snap. Large pieces of gravel cover combined with the Orbit motion sensor sprinkler instead has proven to be the only effective deterrent. So much for having a garden or lawn I guess.

Stopped my cats
As soon as I put these down in a raised bed about two feet high, lined with large bricks, my cats stopped trying to jump into it. I had to completely replace ALL the dirt and re-fill with new soil as the cats had ruined it by using it as a litter box. It is a 30 foot long by 16 inch wide by 12 inch deep raised bed. I used the stakes to hold them to the dirt. Yes, at the beginning, the cats jumped directly onto them. Since it was uncomfortable and they could not scratch at the soil to dig, they quit trying very quickly. I have bought 8 orders of these across two different growing seasons (two years).

Did what I needed
Purchased this because I have 5 feral cats that I feed (yes I had them spayed first) and they were using my flower beds as kitty litter. Tried multiple things for years and this is only thing that has worked so far. Easy to handle as it is lightweight and easy to cut, however you must use your own products to hold down. The little spikes that come with it would not hold anything. I opened them up and laid them out in sun with rocks on each end and that took the curl out. One issue, leaves and all debris sticks to mat, however when you blow the debris off, the mulch stays in place so it becomes a smaller issue. I cut mine and laid them pretty everywhere around plants not just around edges since cats can jump easily. Squirrels don't mind walking on it, but their digging is limited. Cats will not walk on it. Mats are a little pricey for what they are and the shipping is outrageous, but I really needed something to stop the cats as it was compromising my plants.

Efective product
After giving up on several pricey cat repellent sprays and powders, this matting to finally discouraged the feral neighborhood cats from stalking the birds! Hint: Order more than you think you'll need--it doesn't go as far as you expect it to!

Cats are gone! Yes...
Those cats used to keep crapping and crapping and smelling my garden up so bad. My boyfriend and I kept looking for safe ways to keep them away and found this product. After we put it in the garden we NEVER EVER saw them again. It's funny because my boyfriend actually saw a cat trying to walk onto the garden and pricked his paw and meowed and never came back. It's very sensitive to their paw. It's a little pricey for the amount and size of the scat mat but extremely worth it.

Don't bother with other cat deterrents.
I tried dusts and sprays and coffee grounds. These cat mats are great. All I had to do for my area was lay down the cat mats and cover them with bark mulch. Problem solved.

The good news is that the cat stays away
The cat mat needs to be held down with rocks or some other heavy object until it relaxes -- the little plastic clamps that are supposed to stick in the soil and keep it flat are worthless. However, the rocks work. And, you can cut it to fit whatever space you have. The good news is that the cat stays away!!!
