I would expect it would rust pretty quickly so maybe coat with a layer of something protective? Its bigger than most of the cube storage options on Amazon, each cube is quite a bit bigger than I expected.

Are the individual grids 35.5 cm x 35.5 cm?

Yes. It's quite a big, sturdy unit given that it's made from wire! Can't use cubes separately unless you get extra joiners.

Could i just use 4 if that's all i needed?

Yes you can. The mesh grids can be used in whatever configuration you like using the connectors. I used them to form a Guinea pig run.
