Mustek Portable Sheetfed and Business Card Scanner (ScanExpress S40 Plus)

I took a chance on this scanner because I found it at a good price. What I needed was a basic scanner that could scan documents and checks (I bank online), plus the occasional color item. I plugged the unit up to my Win7 laptop and Windows was unable to locate a driver for it. I went to Mustek's support site and was surprised to find the driver wasn't even online, so I had to put the CD in. Surprising, but whatever. I got the driver installed and used Windows Scan to capture an image of a check ... grayscale, JPG, 300dpi. The scan didn't look so great and I know what a 300dpi scan should look like. I uploaded the check and the bank recognized the scan, so technically it was passable, but I still think the quality was lacking. I decided to try a 600dpi color scan - awful. I realize we're talking about a $100 portable scanner, but I still think the quality should be better than it is. Will it do basic scanning? Sure. Does it work as advertised? Yep. Is it worth spending $20 more to get better output and perhaps an SD card slot? Evaluate your needs, but for me - yes. I can't give it five stars because I reserve that for truly exceptional products. And I can't give it four stars because the quality keeps it from being what I call a good value. It gets three because it's "just okay" and it does do what it claims.
