Great Little Workhorse! Easy to use and effective
I have allergies and most days I wake up congested with a dry mouth and cracked lips from snoring all night. Bought this little guy back in October when I noticed it was getting colder. This wee machine packs a wallop! I fill the chamber before I go to bed and it rocks all night. Not only has my breathing - and so my sleep - improved, but with more humidity in the air wearing contacts is easier and my skin isn't as itchy in the winter either. Furthermore, I have very dry hair and I swear the humidifier helps with that too!I live in a space with 15-foot ceilings so I'm not concerned with getting condensation on my ceiling, but this humidifier is also so powerful that it doesn't matter. My plants certainly seem to like it now that they're inside for the winter, and it makes a nice subtle hissing that even sitting beside it I barely notice. The machine does turn off when it runs out of water, and a little red light comes on to let you know it's empty. Make sure you turn the machine completely off for 15 minutes before refilling if it does go dry - you should never hit hot parts with cold water or you could have problems. There is a need to clean the machine once a week because I live in an urban area and our tap water isn't fabulous. We get spots on our dishes and crust forms on the evaporation dome after a few days of constant operation and refilling. Vinegar and baking soda does the job, but if you have well water or don't use water softener you should probably buy filtered water most of the time. I have also found that running a full cup of straight white vinegar through once a week also works, though your house will smell like vinegar for a while. Put a drop or three of your favorite essential oil in the top well, though, and you won't even notice. Usually before the cup of vinegar has completely evaporated I add a pitcher of water to finish the job. Have not tried any coffee machine descalers yet, but it's on my list of things to try to keep the parts cleaner.I had the (mis)fortune of contracting the flu right after I bought this device, and I can say from experience that filling the well with Vicks grease and having the machine run full-steam (yes pun intended) at all times is wonderful for the sinuses. Don't expect an immediate 100% cure for stuffiness, but the humid air and the eucalyptus oils will make the mucus easier to expel via nose-blowing or coughing and you'll breathe easier at night. Once in a while I would hang a towel over my head and drape the works over the steam - not too close! - to get a big blast of warm, eucalyptusy steam right up my nose. WHOO!Essential oils and other smelly liquids evaporate quickly from the top well, I've had to replace a few drops throughout the day (usually lavender, though peppermint works JUST as well. I want to try orange oil next) but I imagine if you mixed your essential oils with a glob of coconut oil it'll last longer. Vicks eventually loses its smell so you have to remove the wax(?) once it's done. I use paper towels to gently sop up the melted wax. DON'T GET WAX OR OIL INSIDE THE MACHINE! It's really hard to get goopy wax or sticky oil out of the parts and it will make the machine quit working, so be very careful when changing wax/oil/grease. Overall, I would definitely buy this or larger again.

Bang for the buck
This is the best warm mist humidifier that I've had, and I've been through a few over the years. I run them 24/7 for 4-5 months through the winter. I've had this one for 2 years with no problem. Love the top loading water reservoir, I just keep a gallon jug of water next to the humidifier so I can fill it when needed. I use this in my large living room as I heat with wood. Even with cathedral ceilings, it does a good job.Any of the warm mist humidifiers are temperamental - they need to be cleaned. I clean mine out every week to two weeks. It will depend on the quality of water you use, but you do get buildup. It's extra sensitive if you run it on high, but I've had no problems running on low. Frankly on high, its gets so humid that I get condensation on the windows, so I usually run on low anyway.Really, its an inexpensive humidifier. For the way I use it, I'm happy to get two years out of it. If it did die, I'd buy this model again.

Best warm mist humidifier.
This is my second Honeywell Warm mist humidifier, see the review of my first one here along with pros and cons of different types of humidifiers:Honeywell HWM-950 Filter Free Warm Moisture Humidifiermy review:http://www.amazon.com/review/R52830B7SJ49P/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B0040ATVI8&nodeID=1055398&store=home-gardenI prefer warm mist humidifiers because I find that the warm moisture makes my room more comfortable in the winter than the other types. I liked it so much I bought one for my parents and they love it.My room is about 12x15 and according to a cheap humidity monitor the humidity in my room went from 25% to 60% overnight. I wouldn't bet money that the humidity monitor is accurate, however it felt very dry before I started the humidifier and it felt humid in the morning, that's good enough for me.This is the best small warm mist on the market IMO.Pros:- Top fill: I love it, I just keep a jug next to it and refill it as it gets low- Easy to clean: The top and several parts go in the dishwasher and the heating element and base get cleaned with vinegar and then a little bleach mixed in water (read directions first, these are separate steps)- Capacity: Stated capacity is 1.3 gallons, I think it's closer to 1.5 if you fill it right to the top though. It easily runs overnight on one fill up and as mentioned I can refill from a jug if it's getting low.- Comfort: Warm mist just feels better to me.Cons: (very minor issues)- Capacity: Capacity is also a con for me... It would have been so easy to make this so it would hold 2 gallons, they should have done that.- Heating controls: HI and Lo only, I would prefer if there were a setting in the middle. not a big deal though.Recommendations:- Clean as specified once a week and it should last a while.- Keep a jug next to it and clean that jug once a week with the same bleach solution.- Don't leave unattended. I would say this for any electric devices, especially items that produce heat by design. Here are the notes from my original review regarding the different types of humidifiers:I found that there are 4 main types:1. Warm mist2. Cool mist (Ultrasonic)3a. Evaporative (Wick)3b. Recirculating Evaporative (Wick)Pros and Cons of each style1. Warm Mist"These humidifiers actually boil the water which causes a distilled steam to be expelled into the room. - About.comPros:- No filters needed- Medication can be evaporated with the steam heat in some models- It feels best in a cool room in the winter. (Evaporative actually creates a breeze which will make a cold room feel colder)Cons:- RISK OF FIRE: Take this very seriously. Warm mist units should never be left operating when nobody is in the house. Yes, they all have a low water automatic shut off, but if that fails these units can cause a fire.- Risk of burn: This unit boils the water, so there is a hot element that can burn if touched. This is not safe around small children.2. Cool Mist (Ultrasonic)"An ultrasonic humidifier is one that uses high-frequency sound vibrations to produce an extra fine water mist that is then expelled to add moisture to the room" - About.comIf I were to buy a cool mist humidifier, I would buy this one:Crane 2.3 Gallon COOL Mist humidifier, White and BluePros:- No wick needed.- No hot element- The moister may spread more evenly through the room because it is not heatedCons:- Since water is not boiled, bacteria present in the water may be dispersed into the air.- Mineral deposits in the water will be expelled with the mist causing a white dust to appear in the room around the humidifier. Reports say that filtered or distilled water will take care of this problem.3a. Evaporative (Wick)Air is pushed through a wick that is sitting in water. The air collects moister as it moves through the wick.Pros:- No hot element.- These seem to distribute moister the best.Cons:- Needs filters.- Mold will grow on the filter.- Will cause airflow in the room, which will make a cool room feel colder.3b. Recirculating Evaporative (Wick)Same as above - air is pushed through a wick that is sitting in water. The air collects moister as it moves through the wick. However as the name implies water is recirculated throughout the unit with a small pump. This reduces the chance of bacteria and mold growing. It will also move more moisture into the air. With the Recirculating Evaporative humidifier water is dropped on the filter from the top rather than being absorbed from the bottom as a standard Evaporative humidifier. If I were to buy this type, I would buy this one:Lasko 1128 9-Gallon Evaporative Recirculating HumidifierPros:- Moves more moister than a standard Evaporative hunidifier.- Reduces build up of mold and bacteria because water is constantly moving.Cons:- Needs filters.- More moving parts means more can break.- More parts means more to clean.- Will cause airflow in the room, which will make a cool room feel colder.

GARBAGE
Used for 6 months and it started freaking out due to buildup. Cleaned it and it was never the same. It is now just lying in garage unusable because I want to contact the company for a replacement via warranty. This thing is literal shit I bought it because I thought the barrel size was nice which it is but its hard to control it shuts off by itself because of humidity levels near the device and its really like a bedsize humidifier with a huge capacity... I love the design, its hard to clean, and it has not lasted nor have I got my money's worth. Not recommended.

I like this unit
I really like this unit it but that said, they seem to only last one full season and then die. This is my third time buying this unit. Twice on here and once thru a local store.

Leaking
I tried to use the humidifier twice and both times it leaked. The second time I tried to use it I disassembled it as if I were going to clean it and the I reassembled it according to the instructions in the guide.
