A must have for Kabar owners.
More specifically, the full-sized or short classic Kabar Utility/fighting knife with the curved clip-point "swedge". The oval shape of this rod makes a lot more contact with the curved swedge than a round rod in an area where flat stones can't reach.BTW, the curved "swedge" has a false edge on it already, but since sharpening the 1.5" inch classifies it as a double edged dagger type weapon, it would be illegal to ship and/or possess in many places unless you're LE or military. The solution was for Kabar to ship it out unsharpened, but just a minute or two of work away from making it razor sharp. Doing so may make it illegal in your area to possess, but once done, the blade will be the thing it was truly meant to be: the all purpose problem solver for virtually everything under the sun, including threats. Of course, it will chew your baton to pieces if you do that sort of wood splitting "batonning" thing in the woods. So, just an FYI there..Otherwise, the sharpener is great. The diamonds are pretty rough and abrasive at first, so break it in by sharpening something like a lawn mower blade or hedge clipper first. Very quickly, this coarseness will adjust and become finer, so much so I was worried if it continued at this rate, it would become useless, but this was not the case. It seems to settle at a point which is kinda fine, leaving micro serrations on the edge. The curved design seems to be the best of both worlds between a flat stone and a typical rod for many applications. I got the 6" and have been using it extensively for a few years now and it still works. 👍

Was hoping it would work faster
I don't know if this is how all oval diamond sharpeners are so I don't want to be too hard on this one, but I spent a decent amount of time trying to sharpen a dull knife according to the instructions (using a circular motion) and I'm still not sure if you can call it sharp. I got the "fine" because I noticed that "fine" is the coarsest that one manufacturer made so I figured it's the standard coarsest oval sharpener. The narrow edge is narrower than it should be for sharpening serrations well, which is what I feared but I couldn't find a good picture of the edge anywhere and I couldn't find an oval sharpener in stores. I improved a serrated knife, but I wish the "oval" shape of the sharpener was closer to a true oval. Maybe there are knives with such small serrations that this sharpener would be perfect, but my serrations seem about average and the sharpener's edge was much narrower than I wanted. I'd take a chance on a different brand if you want to sharpen a serrated knife.

Not bad
Not bad, although not what I expected either. This "sharpening steel" is actually more like a diamond sharpening stone on a stick. I've been collecting knives for a while now and in that time I learned that a "sharpening steel" is an actual hardened steel rod with ridges that re-align the the blade as it is stroked against them, sharpening the knife. This is not a traditional sharpening "steel", it is not a steel rod with ridges (Please see pic 0001) so don't misunderstand... BUT, This sharpener still does a pretty good job at giving my knives a decent edge, so, I really have no complaints about it. It does not produce a razor edge, at least for me, but it does treat a dull edge. Not a bad little sharpener.

Good Sharpener, Not Really Fine Grit.
I have several knives with recurve edges that are very difficult to sharpen on flat stones. The oval shape of this steel works very well on these types of knives. It's listed here as a "fine" sharpener, but it grinds the steel fairly aggressively, so I wouldn't use this just to touch up an edge. I use this on badly dulled edges and then switch to ceramic rods to finish up.

Nice feel...
But I don't think it is going to last much longer. I have used it about ten times and it seems to be not as rough to get the job done, but it could be me. I'm not an expert knife (hoof knives) sharpener!

Excellent product
Works great. Initially very coarse but as instructed, wears smoother and yet retains its cutting/sharpening properties. Much better for kitchen knives than my pencil size diamond sharpener
