Cool air conditioner, literally
I have been using this now for about a month. I did not want to risk purchasing a lesser quality unit because I did not want to deal with leaking water. I live in CA and have less humidity so with this unit I have never had a drip of water with sometimes more than 8 hours of continuos use. If you live in a humid climate and run it a lot, you may have different results. Pros.. Super quick to set up... if you have pretty normal windows you can set this up in 5 minutes, and this is coming from a guy who still does not know which way to turn a bolt to tighten or loosen it. I can screw up just about any basic home project but did this great. Just plug it in and set up the hose. Looks nice and appears to have a quality build, black finish, and about 2/3 the size of those small refrigerators that are just under waist high but not as deep. Easy to operate, remote has a mode button, just make sure the icon is on "snow flake" , other icons are fan and dehumidifier We are in a about a 230 sf room, PLENTY cool enough. I know I did not need one this big but for an extra hundred bucks or so, opted for the 12,000. I also considered that the higher the BTU, the less expensive to run (I think) Easy to unpack, cut two nylon straps and lift the top box off, brilliantly packaged for shipping. When summer is over, wheel it into the garage so you don't have to look at for the winter Wife loves it and we don't have to cool the rest of the house. I think she likes it because we spend more time in the one room together, which we do :) Cons Not really cons but inconveniences to be aware of. It is a little loud but for me, but SO worth the tradeoff for cool air. We have to turn the tv up when its running. I have heard people say they are louder than window AC's, maybe, but I think a window ac is the same noise but actually quieter because most of it is outside the room. The single hose is pretty large in diameter, a little wider than your clothes dryer vent tube and a little bulky. When you feel the heat this think pushes out the hose on a hot day you will see why it is vented outside. We have shutters on the window we used, can't close the big shutter which leaves about 25sf of window exposed. Gives up some privacy. You basically have to point the AC in the general direction if you want to feel the stream of cool air, it has wheels and can easily turn to any radius you want. You can adjust a vent similar to the ac vent in your car. Would be nice if it oscillates the air like the cheap little floor heaters do. Not a big deal though and probably good because one thing less to break. tips... a handyman can charge you about 50 bucks to put a hole in the wall for the vent tube, this way you can not use the window. You'll have a much more streamlined look in the room and not have to mess with a big window. get one of those window locks, has a little thumb screw that tightens on the window track and keeps someone from opening your window since you can't close it easily once you install the vent tube, they are about a buck at any hardware store... google sliding window screw in closing, I think the technology has gotten much better on these things in the past year or two, particularly when it comes to draining water (or I should say lack of draining water) and noise. I was a little concerned it would be big and complicated, it is big but not complicated. Definitely worth the cool air. There is a lot of technology in these units and I think they are pretty cheap for what you get. Where I live electricity is probably more than double the national average (some neighbors have $1100 a month electric bills... seriously) so I think this could easily pay for itself in one summer. Maybe I will update later with a few summer electric bills. Update after a summer of use... I have a second 12,000 BTU unit in a room that is about 800 sf and still would not trade it for anything. Even though it does not cool the entire space, it can be aimed towards me (from about 8 ft away) and still provide a very comfortable cool area. Yes, the entire house is not cool but I like cooling just the area I sit in. Feels great to save the energy cost of cooling the other 2100 sf. My electric bill is about 200 per month in the hottest months which is about half for my area.

Awesome a/c does what it says
I purchased this during a heatwave in the Pacific NW. It was delivered by my surprise a couple days earlier than I expected. And once I received it, I went to reading instructions and getting it all set up. Here is my honest opinion about the product: 1. The instructions on the window installation was not very clear as it only shows a picture of a window that opens sliding up and down. I wanted it to be used for a tall window (over 4 &1/2 feet tall) that slides open left to right. So I called customer service right away. I immediately got a voicemail so I thought.."oh no! I am not going to hear back from them for a couple days", since I had to leave a message. But to my surprise, they called me back a couple hours later!!! The man was very helpful. And explained to me to you can use it even in the vertical position. But the extensions that come with it are not long enough for my window. So he is going to be sending me for free another extension. Also he made 2 suggestions when using the window plates in the vertical position. First, he suggested using screws to secure the plates together as the pressure of the plates in that position may snap the clear plastic screws it comes with. Also he said it wont stay that snug in the vertical position, so Velcro works great to secure the panel to the frame. I know others have made their own panel out of plexiglas drilling a hole in it for the exaust. And while I think that probably a better more secure fit, we all dont have that option. After getting the unit set up which really did not take more than 15 minutes, I turned the bad boy on a let it do its thing. I used the a/c mode and the temp in the room was 80 degrees to begin with. I was immediately impressed with its ability to cool down the local surroundings a couple degrees within 15 minutes. I live in a somewhat newer house with a great room set up with a family room and kitchen and livingroom attached with little hall space between them. Within hours, the living spaces were comfortable at 75 degrees and I used a fan to blow air to the back of the one story house where the bedrooms were at. They too were comfortable after some time. The house is 1500 sq ft. My overall impression so far has been wonderful and has exceded my expectations. The unit blows ice cold air. And although my house was never freezing cold, that is to be expected when there is vaulted ceilings in great room set up. The unit never leaked and was actually quieter than I anticipated. Sounds like a small fan running. I was comfortable while the temps outside soared to the mid nineties. UPDATE: 3/2019. This a/c units still functions perfectly! No issues at all with any leaking. I recommend taking very good care of it by storing it inside in a closet when not in use and making sure to keep it free of dust. Each day I use it, I empty the water tank.

Not fully as described...
The AC works, was easy to hook up, and did cool down a hot room. It's also quiet! However, while it says "400sqft" this AC cannot adequately cool a 300sqft room (11ft ceilings). It took my loft from 85 degrees down to 74 but struggled to get it below that. The next day, it took the loft from 80 degrees down to only 74 once again, seemingly unable to cool below that despite not having as much heat to displace. It takes the edge off of the heat regardless, I just wish it could truly take the room down to the 60s like the 25 year old ac in my old apartment could. Overall I don't regret the purchase, but they really shouldn't say it's good for 400sqft when it can't handle less than that. UPDATE: OCTOBER 1ST, 2013. The AC has maintained functionality throughout the rest of the summer and some of September. I did notice that the temperature gauge completely lost accuracy and has begun to start claiming it's 64 degrees when it's actually 80 (I have an indoor thermometer). Aside from that, it was still functioning when we put it away for fall. Money well spent. UPDATE: JUNE 27TH, 2015 AC is still working. After putting it away last winter the temperature gauge seems to be a little bit more accurate. In 92F weather, the AC can take the loft down to 78. We still need to buy fans, which is really unfortunate given the price of this machine, as 78 is still too warm for indoors. On top of this, the thing is an energy suck, costing us on average $35 more per month to run it without even running it 24/7. The temperature gauge marks the room as a few degrees above what the AC says, though it no longer has as large of a difference after being away all winter. Altogether, I've looked at what else is on the market and I have to be honest, this is the only one I trust under $500. During this ungodly heatwave I took the AC down into my bedroom which is about 150qft. It kept the bedroom at 68f without a problem. Maintenance has not been an issue. It works as it did in the beginning.

Noisy, but very effective for medium sized rooms
My wife and I ordered this at the beginning of summer for our fairly large bedroom. We often refer to this as one of the best purchases that we made this year. While this unit isn't quiet by any means, when paired with a good fan it can cool down a medium-to-large sized bedroom very quickly and keep you comfortable through any heat wave. BASICS TO KNOW - Uses a standard plug - Needs to vent out of a window using an included tube. The tube is ugly. - Does not require any draining or adding of water. - It's pretty big, like bigger than a mini fridge in height, but not as wide. - This is good for a room, not a whole house. THE GOOD - No draining! This thing is as plug and play as it gets. Unlike dehumidifiers or cooling fans that use ice, you don't need to fill or drain anything. - Works very quickly: Pretty much as soon as you start this thing up, it knows that it's game time. - Intuitive controls: It's simple to know what you're doing. - Timer: There are a few set intervals that you can select if you don't want your unit running all day. - Temperature controls: Instead of setting a Low/Medium/High, you choose a temperature that you want the room to be. It's kind of like the difference between a new car with climate control and a car built in the 1990s. - Remote control: We don't use it, but there is one if you really can't stand to walk over to the machine to turn it on. - Powerful for one room: Don't expect this thing to cool down your whole house, but it will take care of most rooms pretty well. If you have a grand living room with a high ceiling, that's a different story. If you have a relatively normal to large sized bedroom or living room and some fans, this thing will take care of you. - Reliable: We put this unit to work all Summer long and it never let us down. - Weight: It's heavy, but it's not unreasonably heavy. One person can set it up pretty easily. - Looks: With the exception of the really ugly venting tube, it's actually a pretty handsome unit. Think of it like a Lexus with a really ugly tail. THE BAD - Noise: This unit is not quiet at all. If you're watching TV, you are going to turn the volume up higher. It will annoy you if it is running while you're on the phone. You will not care about the noise because your room will be nice and cool. - Window insert: We made this work, but the window insert for the vent is made for windows that go "up and down" instead of "side to side." If you pull your window down to close it, then you're all set. If you pull your windows sideways to open and close them, you might have to be a little creative to get the insert to stay. - Venting tube: The venting tube is pretty ugly. It isn't discrete at all, but again, you probably won't care because your room is icy cold. If you care about aesthetics, the tube takes away from the otherwise handsome unit. - Taller than you think: The unit is a pretty substantial addition to any room.

My Model Was Faulty, There Was ZERO Support From JMATEK
The device works but seems to have a shorter life span than I am comfortable with. I can only assume my model is somehow faulty. When I first started using the AC, it worked without issue. It is able to cool a bedroom quickly and it tracks the temperature so that it goes into an energy saving mode once it meets the desired temperature. Once it warms up past the threshold it will resume normal cooling mode. Be advised this machine is fairly noisy when using the cooling functions. After 2 weeks, odd smells began to come from the device on occasional uses. It was being cleaned and drained almost daily in response but to no avail. I reached out to JMATEK for advise, I NEVER received a response. After about 3-4 weeks the odor began to take on a more sulfur like smell, but was still functioning properly. However, the smell was too unpleasant for me to use the machine for long periods of time. Then it happened, just a little over a month after purchasing the device, it began to screech during use. Something is wrong with the mechanisms inside of the device and the smell was similar to burning. So I turned the device off, A part must be jammed. I sent a message to JMATEK again noting of the risk of fire and needing support, no response. I finally reached out to Amazon and it was decided the best course of action is to return the item for a full refund due to the radio silence from JMATEK. Unfortunately, I no longer have the box it shipped in and it's larger than standard sizes so I'll still be out nearly 35 dollars even with a full refund just because of the difficulty to obtain such a large box. I sent one last message to JMATEK, no support to the very end. Ultimately, this was an unpleasant experience. The device seemed promising enough but even with a working model, the fact that there is no support from the manufacturer is enough for me to suggest AVOIDING ANY product that requires support from JMATEK. I am rating 1 STAR due to the device showing critical signs of malfunction within one month of purchase and because there is no support from JMATEK, you risk being royally screwed for a purchase that is half a grand.

Good unit, broke on me just after warranty ended
I've owned this unit for 1 year 4 months. I live in the US NE where we get one month of upper 80s to mid 90s heat with some humidity and a couple months of upper 70s to low 80s. I purchased this unit to cool down a fairly large space consisting of living room, dining room, and kitchen which is approximately 900 sq ft or double what this unit is advertised as being able to cool. We're mostly away during the hot parts of the day so it was only operating for a few hours during the evening and night. Generally we'd point it in the direction of the room we were in at that time. It worked well enough and it would have no trouble if confined to a 450 sq ft room as rated. When it's running in full AC mode it's a little louder than a dishwasher. It was normally stationed in our dining room and I'd have to crank up the sound system in the next room over to be able to hear TV audio over it. It worked well until last week. It was running as usual when all of a sudden this very loud crunching noise began coming from it. I rushed over and saw the exhaust hose had blown off the unit and lots of plastic pieces were scattered everywhere. Turns out some fin on the fan must have been weak and eventually tore off which obviously led to more fins getting broken off and spit out. About a quarter of the fins of the fan in total broke off. Of course this comes a few months after the 1 year all parts and labor warranty expired and so I can't get it repaired. So to sum up my review: a good unit that would cool a 450 sq ft room no problem. But I had to take a star off because of the parts failure just a few months after my warranty expired. If I could go back in time though I would tell myself not to try the portable AC unit experiment as similar BTU rating window units are more efficient and can cool larger spaces.

Stop shopping for other portable A/C's!!!!!!!!!!
I will start with a disclaimer, very picky consumer here. I cannot vouch for the dehumidifier option of this machine because I live in a dry climate and don't use it. This is an amazing portable A/C window unit. We had to go portable due to the small cottage we live in that sports tiny casement windows:( After many searches online for casement style A/C's and this was the most usable unit w/little to no modification of our house. Took less than 15 min from start to finish on instillation. I do recommend going to your local Home Depot ect for soft rubber weather stripping to occlude the spaces in the hose connections at your window. It will blow warm air around your window if not sealed tightly. Pro's: - Timer feature is great. You can set the timer when the machine is in auto off mode to start from 1-24 hours. Perfect for me because it doesn't start getting hot in my area until about noon so I set it to start in 4-5 hours from when I leave for work in the morning (saving energy always a plus) - Cools our entire living room/kitchen area aprox 400-450 sq ft. I've come in from work during our recent heatwave (100+) and the house is a nice low 70's. - Quiet! It's about as noisy as any standing house fan. No lie I was instantly surprised about how quiet this machine was compared to other portable's. Not sure if I'd want it in our bedroom (light sleepers) but in our living room it's hardly noticeable. - No drip pans or water drainage here, if i have some problems with that I'll repost but from the reviews I've read it's minimal in dryer areas. Cons (Small but thought I'd be fair) - $$$ It's a bit pricy at $475 which is what I paid on amazon, but most 10K+ BTU units were around that price range that weren't overwhelmingly scattered with negative reviews. You get what you pay for and I think dropping that kinda coin I'll go with quality and not try to be a cheapskate. - Ideally installing a unit like this (exhaust hose connection) would be best on a window less than three ft from the ground. Ours is installed in a taller window and the included hose barely cut it. If the hose is stressed or bent at awkward angles the machine won't work properly so be careful of where you want to put it. - Can't vouch for the electric bill because we've only been using the unit for a week now but adding an electricity guzzling A/C can't help... enough said there. It has nowhere in the manual or on the machine that it's rated energy efficient AT ALL so if that's a deal breaker than maybe look for a window installed unit they're much easier on electricity surely. Overall I'm glad I read some reviews and searched around a bit because there are many out there but I'm very happy with this one. For a small home or bedroom this is perfect. Our cottage didn't have A/C at all before and it wasn't pleasant. Using it as a primary source of cool air for a decent size area should help readers understand that this really does cool down and make life much more comfortable. Good luck shopping, hope you enjoy it as much as we have...knock on wood it doesn't meltdown after I submit this.

this air conditioner does exactly what it says it does and it does it very very well
i ordered my honeywell air conditioner during a brutally hot spell the last week of june when every day was in the nineties which is torture in seattle as we are not used to temperatures like that and got it at the beginning of july. it worked exactly as advertised, cooled my living room and dining room and with a powerful tower fan blowing in the cool air down the hall and into the bedrooms my roommates were able to be comfortable as long as they kept their bedroom doors open. the kitchen and my bedroom and bathroom were not close enough to be cooled down but i didn't expect one portable air conditioner to cool the whole house so i was very happy with the results. in the areas where people congregate the most we were able to be comfortable depending on how hot it got outside; more if it was mid seventies to mid eighties, less if it got hotter and into the nineties as of course the house would heat up correspondingly from outside. i live in a doublewide mobile home which does not have the insulation of a regular house so for one air conditioner to work so well is a major tribute to its cooling capability. also, if i started it early in the morning even though it wasn't at the time hot enough to need it, of course the house stayed cooler later on than if i waited till noon or so when it got unpleasantly warm inside. in seattle, we have summer rates for our power so it actually costs less to run an air conditioner than it does to run a heater in the winter as winter rates are nearly double so this unit was quite economic to operate even if i needed to run it for twelve hours a day for a month which is unheard of in seattle but this summer made history in the northwest both for record temperatures and how long they lasted. i can see how in places like arizona that get much hotter people could be disappointed by how small of an area it could cool or that it didn't cool strongly enough even though the specifications are clearly stated in the description, but for what i needed, this unit was perfect. if you live in a region that is hotter or have a big house, get a more powerful one or get two of these. just don't have unrealistic expectations and you won't be disappointed. it's easy to set up. i never emptied the drip pan till i put it away for the winter which keeps it from rusting as it sits and i didn't even bother to use the stripping that came with it for the window, just opened it enough for the hose to go out and that was that. there are no words for how much this saved summer for me as i was dreading each day before i broke down and bought it.

great experiences so far
great experiences so far. kept me cool for the whole summer. i was worried about my electric bill because of how much i was using it, but i barely paid $15-20 extra on my bill. have a fairly large bachelor pad, but it is kept nice and cool easily with this thing. love the timer and remote, as i quickly set it to turn on an hour before i get home from work, and enter my breezy cool room. even though i used the dehumidifier somewhat regularly, every time i checked the water container, it was completely empty. i'm sure it fills up more in more humid areas, but i appreciate the auto-evaporation. only issue is it is a bit loud and rumbles a lot. i had to put it on a big foam mat out of worry it would bother the people living below me.

Wonderful
Great AC. Very powerful and easy to range. Unfortunately, exhaust extension is too short. I put my balcony door and open slightly then put the setting to Humidifier. And AC do the rest. Cool down the place and remove smell (aroma) of the apartment.

Overall good unit.
This unit works great. Cools down my apartment really well. I'm on the fourth floor of my building and it is like a sauna in the hallway, but soon as I open the door to my place you can feel the difference. So glad I got it, found it a bit pricey, but had to purchase one or suffer with the heat. Fan is fairly quiet too, just have to turn the TV volume up a bit more... :) One odd thing I find is I can't really notice any difference in the speed from low to medium, but there is a difference when turned on high. Also my windows slide open and the bracket with this unit for venting outside was too short, had to add to it to fill in space. So all in all I do recommend this unit to anyone that's considering purchasing one.

Item was exactly as described. Well packaged and arrived quickly.
We used this air conditioner during the hottest part of the summer. It works very well and cools a large room easily.

Cool!
Looks good and does the job without too much noise. All the reviews for various A/Cs had me expecting a lot of noise, but it is no louder than most large fans. I am very satisfied with my Honeywell!
