Stella Díaz Has Something to Say (Stella Diaz, 1) Paperback – Illustrated, January 22, 2019

This was a wonderful book. I read most of it but it was still easy for my 1st grader to ready and follow along. Subject matter was great too as my child is dealing with similar themes that Stella had to deal with. It was very relatable for her. I definitely recommend this book for any emerging readers!

Our whole school read this with the intentions of meeting this local author. Due to Covid we didn't get to meet her in person, but she did a virtual meeting with our school. This book is great!

I am a teacher librarian and this book fits perfectly with the demographic at my elementary school. Many children are shy and make themselves invisible when in fact they are nervous about their language speaking abilities in English as well as Spanish. I love the way Stella gains confidence in her ability to express herself with the help of family and her BFF. I also liked the Spanish terms interspersed throughout the text and the author's sketches supplementing and enriching the narrative and helping the young or English-learner reader with comprehension.

I used this book as a read aloud in my classroom. We loved the storyline, because it was relatable! It tells the story of a shy girl with language insecurities who faces a bully and the prospect of having to give an oral presentation. We were all rooting for Stella to be an overcomer! There are online resources I used to extend and make connections as part of the Global Road Aloud 2019.
