Not for newcomers to the subject, but otherwise highly recommended.
This book is not meant to be an introduction to the study of Ancient Egypt’s art. Neither is it meant to cover the chronological development of art throughout pharaonic Egypt. So instead of focusing on what changed about Egyptian art over time, he focuses on the main principles which stayed the same over the 3 1/2 millennia of Pharaonic history. As I could not use the ‘Look inside’ feature on this book, this did come as a surprise to me. However esoteric and complex some of his analyses are, I still learned quite a bit and gained a new way of looking at Egyptian art and art history in general. If you’re new to the subject, I recommend Gay Robins’ book “The Art of Ancient Egypt” or Yale’s “The Art and Architecture of Ancient Egypt”.
