Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies

A Good Place to Start
I've been fooling around with home recording for a long time. I've bought several different interfaces and finally bought a Zoom R8 stand alone eight-track recorder. Much of what is in this book I already knew, but it does give some good insights on how to record, and mix specific instruments. For me, it filled in a lot of gaps.I think this is a great place to start for anybody who is just starting out. It basically takes you through the entire recording process, and gives useful advice on each stage of the process, from choosing gear, setting up a room, recording, mixing, etc.The writing is easy to follow if you know the basics of music and sound. The author makes a lot of silly jokes and puns that I found more annoying than funny. He could have left those out.

Free EQing Tips and Tricks
Check out the FREE "Cheat Sheet" for EQing your tracks. The link is listed on this page (if you are viewing the newer edition of this item), just above the Book Description (in a box titled - More to Explore: Tips and Tricks). This is a free, no purchase required, PDF document provided by the author and publisher. I've found it to be an excellent "Quick Guide to EQing Your Tracks." To save a copy on your computer; click the "cheat sheet" link, Select "FILE" on the Adobe Reader or Acrobat menu, then SAVE AS > "PDF". My thanks to Jeff Strong (author) and "For Dummies" (publisher) for providing this free EQing reference guide. I wish that more authors and publishers would demonstrate appreciation for those who purchase their books as they have. The book itself is an essential, easy to read and understand, reference guide for musicians (and non-musicians) who are new to home recording. It is also great for older musicians, like me, who spent their formative years on a quest to perfect the analog-based world of audio recording. I highly recommend "Home Recording For Musicians - For Dummies."

Quite useful information for "Non-Dummies"!
I've been a computer music hobbyist for the last 20 years since I got a Korg M1 and the Cakewalk freeware sequencer which came with my Sound Blaster card, and through some personal research, reading manuals, and trials & errors, I came today to have quite some experience in music recording and sequencing, and I have already mounted my own home studio, but there were still a lot of "missing links" related to mastering, mic usage, etc. I can tell that this book provides a lot of these "missing links" which surely would make a song come out much more polished. I'm even learning a lot from reading the parts that I could skip on a first thought, and all information presented is clear, organized, easy to understand, and even fun! I would surely recommend this book if you're looking to mount your own home studio, or even if you already have mount and would like to polish your skills!

Excellent introduction, but partially dated.
Beware: this book was written and published circa 2011. While it isn't out of touch, it isn't in touch with the current technology and programs. Much of the technical info (a small portion of the text) is now old, since the programs and computers have evolved so fast. It almost seems written in 2011 by a person still relating to experiences from 2005.Aside from that, this book has a lot of very useful information on how to set up inexpensive recording studios, how to approach projects, how to sculpt sound for a professional outcome. This primer on the nuts-n-bolts of music/sound production is what every beginner should be familiar with. If you are moderately experience, or you've studied recording thoroughly, you will probably be bored by the basic information in this book.

Great for the price!
You may be skeptical at first but the "for dummies" series always brings legit information for a pretty good price. For half the cost of other books I still get all the basics of starting my own home recording studio. It does a really good job of explaining what the basics are and what you need to keep in mind. Whether you are a full band or a one man band this book will help you get started from what equipment you may need to selling your stuff to make some serious cash.

Sorry, not for dummies
I was looking for a book to get me started, a book that would give plenty of information about each level of recording complexity and affordability. This author is, I think, much more interested in discussing the more complex and more expensive systems. He has very little interest in dealing with products for the less technophilic buyer or the buyer with a very modest budget. Simply, the book is wrongly titled. If you think your situation is similar to mine check out "Everything Home Recording Book". It's working for me.

Not quite as advertised
Though the front and back covers of Home Recording For Musician For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education))  have three separate references to using "tablet" computers for audio recording, the book itself has NO references to using such devices (according to the index and a fairly careful reading of the book). NONE!That said, the material which is included seems to give a clear, comprehensive overview of the process. Espcially welcome is guidance on using older analog equipment with most newer digital recording media.

through the maze
An excellent guide through the maze of home recording, dealing with the highly technical themes (made simple) and the more common encounters in the workings and set up of a basic home studio. The book lay out is to be commended inasmuch that it starts at ground zero and builds a very tall solid structure, with the advantage that one can go up or down a floor to revise or recover information.the Kindle Amazon version has a dark back ground screen with the salient points posted on a white sheet, thus giving an easy absorption rate for eyes and brain; taking in what is very technical and initially working patterns and procedures. The author uses humor in the right places and gives the impression of an an avuncular spirit standing over the reader's shoulder taking the novice through the 'garden gate'.The style and language is economic, efficient and is pitched at tyro to hot pro! For the reader it is something that can be read and re-read and this in essence is it's greatest strength, basically it's not a weary slog read!!Not unlike the best books it makes the reader cheer or whoop when they get it! Or just love to bash on into the wee hours unaware of the moving hands! So I as a tyro thoroughly recommend this book, it will start you wanting to know more about a plethora of related subjects in the field of sound. For artist who can't bear all the engineer's technical twaddling and Mr Spock's lines, well this is for you, it fulfills the pontiffs role admirably!

Home Recording Made Easy..
This book is really good. It demystified a lot of the complicated jargon connected with home recording. I first started getting into recording demos, way back with a first generation Tascam 4 track and shyed away from using modern digital equipment. After reading this book I found a Boss BR 800 recorder, with and without computer, as easy to use.It explains everything, from obtaining equipment, through setting it up and actually recording. To how to make the best use of what you've recorded..

A great informative book
Helps greatly in understanding the principles of how sound waves travel and interact with the environment you are in whether it be an instrument or vocal track and how they can affect a recording, very informative and of course simply laid out.
