I'm glad I did
First, let me say that Amazon sent me the wrong tool. They sent the 5 lb Pick Mattock instead of the 2.5 lb one that I ordered. I kept the 5lb one to avoid the hassle of returning and waiting for a replacement. I'm glad I did... It may be tiring to swing around for any length of time, but MAN it sure is effective. I broke up hard-packed soil for a garden in no time... so much better than a shovel and hoe. This was my first time using a pick axe/mattock, so maybe I'm really just giving "Pick Axes" in general 5 stars, but this one performed admirably with no complaints. Head quality was good: straight, not particularly sharp, but good enough for soil. (If I were principally cutting tree roots, I might have sharpened it up a bit.) I used every surface of that head: besides the obvious uses, the head held flat against the ground makes for a great grading/leveling tool. The mattock side is perfect for dragging through tilled soil to make trenches for planting. The handle felt really comfortable and solid. I expect this tool will last a very long time.I loved swinging this thing. As I laid in bed that night, a little bit sore from the day's labor, I couldn't stop thinking about that axe. Seriously: I kept wondering what other part of the yard I could tear up and plant something new. Can't wait to get back to swinging that axe. Anytime you can say that about a tool, then you know it is good.

It's a well made, heavy, reliable pick
Just what I needed for digging in heavy clay and rock. Padded handle and two different tips are great. You can wear yourself out swinging this baby for a few hours. Highly recommended for some major digging.

Effective for digging in tough areas and can be used for stump removal if you're brave enough.
I had to remove a bunch of small to mid-sized stumps and didn't want to pay for a stump grinder service or rent a grinder. This tool can help you get that job done manually, but you will spend days at it and even with good gloves it will shred your hands and give you a workout that leaves you barely able to walk for a few days after. The aches and pains are not the fault of this mattock. It's because I chose to brute force the job at the expense of my body. Anyhow, this tool is extremely useful at light excavation and cutting away roots for things like transplanting plants/bushes/small trees, and capable of tougher jobs like I used it for. I bought both the Truper 31614 (pick) and 31638 (cutter) and found myself using the pick more than the cutter for my job, but the two complement each other so you may want to get both -- it also is handy to have both just in case you can corral a friend or family member to lend a hand.

My New Favorite Yard Tool
My new favorite yard tool for planting shrubs and removing roots from my garden! Very sturdy, very light, easy grip even with my arthritis and gets the job done quickly. I have red clay to deal with any time I'm planting and this tool is the BEST - wish I had purchased one years ago. The only reason I gave it four stars is because the wooden handle gave me splinters in both hands right when I took it out of the box. After sanding it was perfect. I love it!

Lightweight and easy to use
I like the light weight of this item. Good for small garden work.

Seems well built. Compared to wooden handle, better! ❤️
Got it today, studied it pretty good. Did not use yet, so stop reading if that matters to you. I will update if the head comes flying off and goes through my car window.Fiberglass handle excellent. Grip awesome. Head seems well attached. The pointed end is very pointy, sharp. The blade end is also sharp but not like a knife. Was well packed, shipped in big box, head end fully bubble wrapped and taped by Amazon. No complaints.Very glad I listened to the reviews and got the 2.5 pounder; it's plenty heavy for me (and I weight train routinely). No need 5 pound head unless one plans to use it for short periods of time, like one tree root. If using all day, lugging into forest, using at a campsite, clearing an overgrown field, the smaller weight will be better. I'm digging a 200 foot trench, this is right for me. The one I got is the 2.5 pound pick mattock with fiberglass handle. At the time I bought it, the fiberglass was only about four bucks more than the wooden handled model; seems worth the upgrade. Will save vibration on hands and arms, methinks. Also, fiberglass is slightly heavier than wood (as anyone who owns a fiberglass ladder knows), making the 2.5 pound model ideal in weight for use. The review where the guy uses this on the Appalachian Trail made a lot of sense to me. Use caution with the reviews as Anazin is selling many weights and varieties of this tool and lumping all the reviews together. My model has a black head despite the photo having a silver head.Like the color so I can see it easily in the garage and in the brush. Like the feel of the handle, size, etc.No complaints yet. If I don't update this review with complaints, know that it's working out for me. My first purchase of this imported brand, so far so good. If the head chips, slides off, breaks, if the handle splinters, the rubber grips get loose, blah blah, I'll update this review and slaughter this product. Otherwise, know things are ducky.Addendum: I dug my long trench and did a couple other projects. Love this thing! Works well, no flying or loose head, superb. I will say, the fiberglass handle actually burns my sliding hand as I’m chopping downward; the non-dominant use hand burns across the fiberglass shaft, and I never experienced this with a wooden handled tool. Anyhow, gloves are mandatory. But, still, this sucker is the cat’s pajamas! 🐱
