Wonderful addition to library. A well written developmental and operational history with ample b&w photos and 3 view profiles. A couple of detailed cutaways and ends with an appendices of squadrons and codes and individual disposition by serial number. Excellent reference for Lancaster fans.

Excellent - though now dated - guide for historians and modellers
Rating a book written and published in 1965 is a process fraught with peril. While facts do not change, the availability and initial accuracy of information can be subject to extreme shifts. At the same time, quality work will stand the test of time. Lancaster - The Story of a Famous Bomber by Bruce Robertson is just such a book.As mentioned in my review of Aircraft Camouflage and Markings: 1907 - 1954, the 1960s was a time when interest in aircraft modelling was a nascent artform. Those attempting to create realistic and accurate copies of historic planes were faced with an impossible task in determing exactly how a specifc craft appeared. For the AVRO Lancaster bomber - and several other well-known fighters and bombers of World War Two - Harleyford Publications was not just the foremost source, it was more-or-less the only source! This volume covers both antecedents and descendents of the bomber that showed an amazing versatility. Modified to drop a counter-rotating depth charge used to destroy German dams, it was also modified to carry and deliver the two largest bombs by weight dropped during the war. This history is shown both textually and visually, combing detail;ed descriptions and emaculate and precise 1/72nd renderings of the various versions of this aircraft. There is even a list - by serial number - of the fate of each and every Lancaster built. It is incorrect only in the matter that in the 43 years since it was complied a number of individual examples listed as wrecks or of unknown status have been restored to their original beauty.A wonderful book!
