Question 1

I don't want to burn anything.  I don't want to play music.  I wish to listen to my mp3 audio books.  Does it pickup where it was when turned off?

It's been about a dozen years at least since I last had this player. I also used it for audio books and I'm pretty sure it must have allowed you to resume playback or it wouldn't have worked for that use.  A word of caution about this player though.  It performs very poorly if you walk around carrying it, as motion stops it's ability to read the CD.  The anti-skip feature works by pre-reading a few minutes of play and storing it in it's limited memory. After you walk around for a few minutes with it unable to read you use up the pre-stored portion and it starts to skip like crazy.  It drove me to switching to an mp3 player.  Which, by the way, if you want to go there i highly recommend a Sansa Fuze mp3 player.  You can still find lots of functional ones for sale on eBay.  It's mainly the 4GB versions that are still available.  If you are patient you can win a bid for about $50 including shipping.  I've bought several this way at no more than that.  All this presumes you have the ability to copy your CD audio files to the mp3 player which should be a simple drag and drop step using Windows Explorer or the equivalent Mac based file transfer methodology if that's what you have.  And the Sansa Fuze does feature resuming playback where you left off.  A final word about the Sansa players.  If you go this route, be sure to get the older version, which is wider and has sharper corners.  The newer, sleeker looking version is horrible.  I would also stay away from Sansa Clips.

When playing an mp3 for about an hour it stops. I put in fresh batteries and problem continues, stopping after an hour of playing?

I have no info on cd players, but I use and love Sansa Fuze mp3 players, at least the 2 GB versions I have bought.  They work like an iPod but without all the proprietary Apple limitations.  Both the old 2GB and 4GB units are still available, although at an elevated price (link for my 2GB unit: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Video-Player-Black/dp/B0015L0T3G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371876674&sr=8-1&keywords=sansa+fuze+2gb).   Sandisk also makes a smaller unit, the Sansa Clip and there are newer models of both.  I just can't speak to their quality, as I haven't tried them.  They seem to be well rated, but it might be worth your while to read a few of the reviews on the newer models if you are thinking of getting one of those.Hope this helps.
