The legendary War of the Vendee under the French Revolution is depicted through the eyes of two spouses in an epic series of victories, retreats and exodus through France. At the source of the conflict is a persuasive idea that changed the course of most countries around the world. First among them were Russia, China, Korea and Cuba. Five historians representing their nations examine how the French Revolution revealed both the promises and blunders of the first sot experiment in modern time. For not complying to their “liberators”, in the Vendee, 120 000 unarmed civilians are drowned in the Loire River or beheaded in the Vendee. Over the border, other countries become aware of a new threat to civilization: “state tyranny”. Progressively, the blue-clad army leaves the Vendee and turns to Holland, then Russia, where it finally meets its doom. Sophie and her husband come back to their land. Martin knows he lost that year but won for centuries to come. Sophie commits their memories to paper while in the capital, meticulous officers archive the commands of the bloody campaign. Those archives informed many historians, as well as this film. Since then, the French experience became the litmus test as to whether people would flourish or suffer.
