A must read for us over 60s!
I was born a few years after Lillian and I remember the excitement in watching her run and take part in national and international competitions. I did not fully appreciate the impact her family had on her life and sporting career. I cannot begin to imagine the devastation her illnesss annd death had on her close friends, fellow competitors and family. I know how upset I was and I was only someone who knew of her from the news reports. The book is well documented but I found it difficult to work out the year of some events and competitions. Not everyone would know when a particular Olympics took place for example. I am reading this book again now as the first time was just to get a gist of her life. Love it. Bought a used copy and the book is in excellent condition. Well done to the seller.

... the only book available about the life of this wonderful & talented girl
Incredibly this seems to be the only book available about the life of this wonderful & talented girl, written by her fiance. A very good read it is too, detailing Lillians career progression & her great achievements in the era before sport became contaminated with drug cheats. A very modest girl despite her glamour & talent, with a personality that transcended sport & made her so loved not only in Britain but world wide. The second half of the book detailing her brave fight for her life against the terrible cancer that ultimately took her young life, had me fighting back tears, but is a testament to her courage. She deserves to be far more widely remembered & feted today than she is, but to those of us who remember watching her Lillian will always be 'The Golden Girl'. How tragic & cruel that she was taken so young.

Lillian Board, the tragic heroine of British athletics
Written by the man she intended to marry, this is an excellent and absorbing biography. Divided into two parts, the first deals with Lillian's successful athletics career, which saw her become double European champion and, with her beauty and charm, win public affection as the 'golden girl' of British athletics. The second part is a first-hand account of the final year of Lillian's life, detailing the bravery and will-to-live of this remarkable young woman as she battled against cancer. Both informative and moving, this book is a worthy testament to a brilliant athlete who was cruelly struck down before she could reach her prime.

Such a moving book
I read this book in my teens. I remember crying when I read it and it remained in my memory. It's a superb book, compelling, but ultimately so sad. She was a special girl who had a special future lined up. This proves how cruel life can be.I found the tributes from other athletes at the end of the book especially moving.Sleep tight Lilian. You deserved far more of a chance.

Remembering LIllian Board
Reading "Lillian" brought back so many memories of a wonderful athlete. I can remember watching her win the silver medal at Mexico. She was a great role model for girls and young women. Her illness and death shocked and saddened so many people. This book should ensure that Lillian Board's athletic achievements and courage during her last months won't be forgotten.

Very sad true story.
I liked getting this book as I remember my late father having it and it reminds me of him. Also the remarkable story of this brave young girl is a total inspiration.

So sad
Read this book many years ago just after Lilian died and it was so sad to have watched her blossoming career and then heard of,her death. The author really touched my heart with what he said about her. Although we know young people can die for various reasons it is still truly sad that someone with so much talent can never reach their full potential
