A fun toy, FOR PROGRAMING and TINKERING
This is not, and will not be (at least in the near term) a product for the typical end user. One other person commented that this is also only good for those that are experienced programmers... I would like to point out that is not entirely true either ... There are some resorces available that will help you get started with programing with this device. I am not an expert programmer, i don't even consider myself a good programer, but I'm using this device to learn a lot of things... I've wanted to learn more programming, however a big issue with me is that I just didnt know what to make / didnt have anything interesting to work on... This device changes that and makes the process of learning a fun experience for me. Learning with this device will further my abilities and make me more marketable, not because I can program a Kinect but because I'm motivated to learn more programing in general because of the Kinect. If your kind of a geek, and want a toy to play with, something that will challange you to learn some new things and have fun while you are at it, this is a pretty cool item to pick up!If you want something to plug into your computer that will make your computer do some neat things out of the box, you might want to move on and get a different toy.Additional Note: You are going to want to have a decent computer to plug this into... I'm getting ready to upgrade my very old dual core system, but this thing is killing my computer right now... Anytime I start talking to this device my CPU utilization runs solid at 100% and it is not giving me a very good frame rate on the video feeds. THIS IS NOT THE SENSORS FAULT, I'm just putting a note here that your computer does make a difference with this device! ... That being said, I am still playing with it and enjoying my time learning about the product.

Took some experimentation to get it going
Didn't work initially, because the latest drivers do not work with Windows 10. You have to use the version 1.8 drivers, not 2.0. once I got it working, it was surprising how well it did work, there's almost no lag whatsoever. Surprising for a USB based video device.

Kinect Sensor for Windows is Awesome!!
I'm using the Kinect sensor for Windows for its Infrared detection capabilities - I was previously using the Kinect sensor for XBox360 and was told that the Windows version is much more accurate - it's true -that being said - this is a research tool - not for game playing - but if you're doing research - this is the sensor you want - I've had no problems with it at all and - as I said before - because of its accuracy - my research is coming along much faster as a result of using the Windows version than if I had stayed with the XBox360 version - Try it - You'll love it.

Great innovation but not for consumers
This is an amazing product. It can recognnize body joints and movement just by looking at you. However, be aware this for developers ONLY. It coming with nothing that will help you use it is any way. You have to go on the web and find tutorials and demos from microsoft.com and coding4fun.com. You MUST have, and be proficient with Visual Studio. Don't buy this unless you has extensive experience with C++ or VB.NET and know how to use references and libraries. It is bit like buying a PC in the eighties - You had to know what you wanted to do with it.If you have the knowledge and have an application to create a truly remarkable UI then get this, otherwise wait for someone to make you a consumer product out of this.

Too soon to be useful; may change soon.
This product is hardware only. No manual; no software. Plug it into Windows 8 Developer Preview and drivers download, but that's it. Install the Software Development Kit (SDK) and you can see the crudest demos. I also downloaded a couple of third party tools, none of which worked. Right now, it's a paperweight.Hopefully, when Windows 8 Consumer Preview comes out 2/29/11, this Kinect will become useful. More likely, it will take months. By which time, the price will come down. Wait, unless you're a developer.Details: Amazon deletes a link here, so search for supersite kinect for professional evaluation of this package as it stands right now (could change anytime).

RIP to the GOAT
Never even used it, in a box at this point. Wanted to build something with it, but kind of pointless right now. Wish this got more traction, great technology.

Awesome and relatively inexpensive
I love the fact that this is both affordable and also provides an excellent SDK and an IDE (Visual Studio). Some folks may be turned off because you have to use Windows, Visual Studio, and either C# or Visual C++, but I find that it's a small compromise to run Windows 7 in a dual-boot configuration on my Macbook Pro laptop in order to utilize the great hardware, SDK, and IDE.
