A Birdwatchers’ Guide to Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Caymans: Site Guide (Where to Watch Guides)

A Real Disappointment
Book could have been good, but not of much use due to so FEW birding sites being included in the book, and too little useful "strategy" information for the few sights it did include. This is easily the worst "Birdfinding / Birdwatching" type of book I've purchased.

Outstanding Guide
I highly recommend this guide to any birder planning to visit these areas. Having been to Cuba, I can state unequivocally that the recommendations are spot-on, right down to the sometimes obscure landmarks. If you're not traveling with a group like the Caribbean Conservation Trust (or even if you are!) this guide is essential. Highly recommended, written by authoritative authors. They know the areas and the birds like no one else.

Not a photographic field guide.
Not what expected. Needing a photgraphic field guide with pictures. This is a bird finding guide with only an occasional black & white drawing.

I purchased this book because I was going birding in Cuba. It proved to be a valuable resource guide because of the information it provided not only with respect to birding in Cuba but also because it provided additional information useful to the traveler such as small, but not particularly accurate maps of areas and general information for the non-Cuban. However in defense of the poor maps, the written directions on how to find quite difficult-to-find-otherwise areas were amazingly accurate and easy to follow. The species' lists are comprehensive and therefore very useful. I would have liked an itemized index at the back of the book as the table of contents is very basic. Also, I was surprised that a very productive area in the north of Cuba, Cayo Santa Maria, did not rate even a mention and that is where several rare and accidental species were found. I have birded in Hispaniola in the past and plan to return there. I do hope this book will serve as well for that Island as it has for Cuba.

Tres bon guide

Be warned!!
Never was the old adage "never judge a book by its cover" truer than in the case of this publication.I was due to fly out for a holiday in Cuba and being a keen amateur birdwatcher I wanted a handbook that would help me identify the main species I was likely to encounter. I ordered this book largely on the basis of its front cover, which features a Cuban Tody in full breeding plumage. Big mistake! The cover photo is the only one in the entire book. Other illustrations are limited to a few line drawings. This text essentially is about where to see birds, rather than what birds to see. It gives good general descriptions of the main birding sites, how to get there, and where to stay when you do. But it is a book for the specialist - the experienced birder who knows what to see and wants to know the best sites to see them. It is too big to put in your pocket, and is a reference book that's OK in the car but of little use in the field. If, like me, you want an illustrated book of handy size that identifies and illustrates the main birds of the Caribbean, stay clear of this.
