This book is a great model of what one person with an idea could do
This book is a great model of what one person with an idea could do. “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” is an autobiographical novel written by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. It focuses on how WIlliam Kamwamba tries to make a windmill from scraps even though he could not continue going to school. When William’s tiny village in Malawi, Africa, was struck by a horrendous famine, he and family could barely feed each other due to the loss of crops, leave alone paying for school. Forced to drop out of school, William found a library book that gave him a huge idea - he could build a windmill for power made out of scraps and not only could it help his family, but it could also help the village. It is truly a story about an inspiring boy that changed many lives. It takes you on a rollercoaster of emotion with a lot of twists and turns. “I tried and I succeeded” is one of the best quotes. The problem and the words William Kamkawamba used were so realistic, it made the book come alive.I recommend it for people who want to hear about overcoming problems, a different culture, and a hero’s journey. People from ten and beyond should read this. I rate this a 5/5 book because of its plot and word of choice. I really liked the ending of the book when he described what he changed. Also it gave me an important realization of how people struggle to get education. If you read this, you will be inspired.

Brave boy Overcome Village Wisdom
Here is a boy who liked to troll through junk piles to see what can be made. First he created a radio. Then he realized the poet of a windmill which would create rain on a year round basis. The villagers thought he was crazy to invent this contraption. But a demo for the whole village proved successful in creating wind and rain. He became a hero for the village whose farmers couid plant year around and eventually a presenter at TED talks.

Nothing can stop some people.
This is a fascinating story of a poor African farmer’s son who loved to tinker with anything electric and without any education figured out how to build a windmill that brought electricity to his home and eventually to his community. Now he dreams of doing this through his whole country.

Love this book to read with middle schoolers
Such a motivating story - love the way it’s organized in chapters for kids. I highly recommend this book to read with middle schoolers, with parent permission. There are some heartbreaking sections because famine is just that. William’s account is so real and touching. We loved it.

My son's thoughts about this book
I would recommend this book to my friends. It's a good story. I especially liked when his windmill worked. It was funny when some people thought it blew away the clouds. Khamba's death was the saddest part.
