The TR-626 is sort of an upgraded digital version of the classic TR-606 and TR-505 Rhythm Composers. This beat-box is still simple but has a few good points that come from its legendary ancestors - the TR-909 and TR-808. Its sounds are pretty drab, they are 12 bit low-quality samples of the most boring acoustic drum sounds around. Fortunately the sounds can be individually tuned and mixed and there are 8 individual outputs for the basic sounds as well as a stereo out. Its sequencer is very basic, coming with 48 preset patterns and 48 user patterns. But it has a simple matrix display similar to that on the TR-505, clearly displaying the current pattern in a graphical layout. The 626 also featured very good MIDI implementation for it's time. It has been used by Vangelis and Jimmy Edgar.

used to own this piece of garbage
The other reviewer saying its a workhorse and this and that must be doing gigs in a geriatric place. it's a horrible machine, sample based piece of garbage. i wouldnt pay 50 dollars for it, let alone 577 dollars as someone is daring to ask. this isnt a classic, has absolutely no killer sound at all. it needs to disappear to never surface.

..."drab"..."boring sounds"...the "person" who wrote the "description" seems to be of the opinion that the millionth iteration of an 808 kick is "teh sex"...and has never actually programmed nor processed beats. The TR626 is a small profile powerhouse. Sounds can be tuned per step, as can the volume. Accents can be added.Beats can be programmed by step, or live playthrough. They can be altered with a multistep swing function. Beats can be saved as patterns, and as full songs. There are 2 outputs for stereo image, plus 8 mono outs for individual voices. Midi i/o AND 1/8" CV output (controlled by 'rimshot'), allows step sequencing of midi +CV devices. Not glossy like the laptop sized 808/909, nor fake chromey like the 606, but a workhorse of 80s drum machinery that introduced some modern functionality...and mine still works fine in 2016 onstage and in studio.
