can I run a test on a specific cable and then add a name to that specific cable that I tested?

Yes you can but you have to do the naming on the PC. Once you plug in the tester you see test numbers and there is a place to name it.

Does this work with the older byte brothers model.

No. Only LVPRO20 ,30, & 30SR are compatible with the VTM

Can i print the results

Yes. Reports can be printed from a PC running LVPro Manager. The reports are NOT to be considered CERTIFICATION. In my opinion it is a great tool for it's features and price. Don't expect it (or any low cost tester) to perform the same level of diagnostics and documentation that a more costly CERTIFIER is designed to do. Triplett / Byte Brothers has a VERIFIER RWC1000K. I don't own one but I trust that any installed cable that tests GOOD with it, will also pass data. I haven't done the research to determine the differences between a $320 dollar tool and one that costs between $2000 and $40,000. I suppose that all depends on whether you are installing, maintaining or designing a data network. Years ago, I worked for a large company and had a $10,000 (at that time) Fluke tester that could tell me how far down the wire someone "stepped" on it using a visual waveform. The newer model of that tester is $20,000. The RW1000k looks good to me and won't break the bank.

will it test active network drops. can it be toned while network line is active ?

You can select pairs to tone, so you could select pair 4,5 to avoid 10/100 (1,2 or 3,6) switch connections that could short out the tone. It also does port blinking for identifying ports on a live switch. Their website has good videos.
