Other reviews were reason I got this.
I read good reviews so decided to get this 4 movie collection,& the reviews were right, they're good movies. "It Happened On 5h Avenue" with DonDeFore(Ozzie&Harriet's neighbor,Mr. Baxter in "Hazel")is really young in this as well as the guy who played the boat captain on Gilligan's Island & I think was Little John in Errol Flynn "Robinhood", & other recognizable faces. Good story. "HolidayAffair"with RobertMitchum is good too. The other 2 are good but are tear jerkers. Good binge watch worthy with nothing offensive in language etc.

Four 40's / 50's movies -- some more Christmassy than others, in one bargain set
The four Americans movies in this boxed set range in quality from quite good to just-okay, but the low current price of less than ten dollars recommends them highly. In order of my preference, they are --IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE (1947) -- Every winter, a polished but homeless man (Victor Moore) squats in the same boarded-up millionaire's mansion in New York City. This year, due to Manhattan's acute postwar housing shortage, he winds up taking in other homeless souls, but the real story is the screwball "meet cute" between the owner's daughter (Gale Storm) and an aspiring architect (Don deFore).Despite the housing-shortage premise, this film really harks back to the zaniness of some of Frank Capra's comedies like YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU (a mixed bunch in a large house, with little in the way of material resources but enjoying each others' company) or the Depression-steeped rom-coms of the Thirties, in which a couple obviously meant for each other has to overcome material and other barriers to happiness (think of CHRISTMAS IN JULY). Despite the somewhat hodgepodge nature of the plot, the film convey's well Midtown Manhattan in December and the polished cast, which includes Charles Ruggles and Ann Harding, goes through its paces quite competently.HOLIDAY AFFAIR (1949). Early in her film career but midway through his, a widowed professional shopper (Janet Leigh) squares off against department-store toy salesman (Robert Mitchum). Problem is, in true screwball fashion, she's about to get married to the dull reliable type (Wendell Corey) to provide security for her young son, whose antics the viewer will find either charming of irritating. While a little trite, the movie mines the Christmas vein very well, with one long and very funny scene taking place during a surprising Christmas dinner. If you liked 1947's MIRACLE ON 34th STREET you'll probably like HOLIDAY AFFAIR -- in some ways they are very similar, especially given the department-store milieu and needy fatherless child.BLOSSOMS IN THE DUST (1941) is a fictionalized biography of social-reformer Edna Gladney, a genuine mid-twentieth figure from Texas whose goal was to have the stigma "illegitimate" stricken from the records of children put up for adoption. This was, I am told, the first of a dozen movies pairing Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. A little stuffy at times, with the kind of earnestness that led a Fifties critic to say that MGM had "sold its soul for a pot of message," but it goes down well enough in Metro's glossy technicolor adaptation, though parts of it drag. Not particularly Christmassy. My least favorite of these four movies, but still worth watching, is 1957's ALL MINE TO GIVE starring Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell as heads of a pioneering Scottish family that winds up in a rough-hewn Wisconsin village in the 1850s. This is the kind of movie that tends to drag in between the (spoiler--mostly tragic) high points, but the supporting cast includes the likes of Reta Shaw as the battle-axe busybody; other townsfolk include Ernest Truex, Ellen Corby, Hope Emerson, and Alan Hale, Jr.; look fast for Madge Blake as a samaritan-in-disguise. A handsome movie, in Technicolor and widescreen from the old RKO Pictures in its last year of existence. The picture ends at Christmas but is not, to my way of thinking, a "Christmas movie."

An excellent collection of dramas and comedies set at Christmas
I purchased this collection for three of the four films. I already have a copy of the tearjerker drama, 'All Mine To Give" which is the tale the Eunson family of six siblings who must split up when both their parents, Robert (Cameron Mitchell) and Jo (Glynis Johns) die within a short period of time. This drama has a fine supporting cast of Ernest Truex, Alan Hale, Jr.,Hope Emerson, Royal Dano, Sylvia Field, and Reta Shaw. The child actors are led by Rex Thompson and Patty McCormack. The second film, 'Holiday Affair' is a funny and witthy romantic comedy starring Janet Leigh, Robert Mitchum, and Wendell Corey. Connie Ennis (Leigh) must decide between steady friennd and lawyer, Carl Davis (Corey) and straight-shooting and relative stranger, Steve Mason (Mitchum). Young Gordon Gebert plays Timmy Ehhis her son and he is fantastic. The third film, 'It Happened On 5th Avenye' is a brilliant screwball comedy in which a homeless man, Aloyisius T. McKeever (Victor Moore) takes up 'resdience' in the unoccupied mansion of multimillionaire real estate tycoon, Michael J. "Mike" O'Connor (Charles Ruggles) along with an unemployed vetran, Jim Bullock (Don Defore). The trouble begins when the man's rebellious daughter, Trudy O'Connor (Gale Storm) arrievs and falls for Jim. Soon others arrive to squat in the mansion and the fun revs up when Mike O'Connor arrives, looking for his daughter. His estranged wife, Mary O'Connor (Ann Harding) arrievs to intervene and madcap mayhem ensues. Victor Moore shines as the eloquent wise man who helps everyone. The fourth film, 'Blossoms In The Dust,' is the true story and tearjerker about Edna Gladney (Greer Garson) who founded a home for foundlings and fought the civil fight for elimianting the bran of 'illegitimate. Walter Pidgeon plays her supportive husband, Sam Gladney. This is nto really a Christmas movie but it is a great drama.

Nostalgia
I purchased this dvd specifically for the film 'The Day they Gave Babies Away' (All Mine to Give) which although dated brings back memories of watching it 50 years ago. It's a true story and so sad but lovely, especially at Xmas.
