Regarding some of the other reviews. The film made us think about globalization and big business. Yes, China historically was very advanced indeed, but all countries have their ups and downs: decades of communist socialism damaged China. It is now certainly doing very well, but part of the reason is they have stolen intellectual property. That's just a fact that is unrelated to their amazing history.Another review objected to the "xenophobia": it appears that many believe that we should see the very real faults in ourselves, but regard other countries as being perfect. They are not. There are some real advantages to being American, and anybody who has lived elsewhere knows that.Did the romance have insufficient basis in the film? Yes, I think so. When there is immediate attraction, there has to be something superficial about it--at least initially. The usual scenario is a young, beautiful woman (sex object), and a very successful man (success object): that was not the case here--thankfully...it was good to see the male lead fall for a woman more or less his own age. But it did result in insufficient relationship development.The acting was good.

I am a big Tom Hanks fan the story is compelling but man does it drag I know I am giving a 4 star but it was good but I do like slow movers as long as the story takes me on a journey. Tom's life is jacked up but here in Saudi Arabia of all places he is renewed and yes I have been to Saudi Arabia

Definitely a Tom Hanks movie -- he plays a has-been salesman who is trying to prove that he is still relevant & needed by honchoing an attempt to sell an IT system to the King of Saudi Arabia. You could say it's Willy Loman as T.E. Lawrence before he became Lawrence of Arabia except his boss wants him to retire, his ex-wife wants him out of their daughter's life, and his daughter just wants him in her life more, preferably with money to pay for college.The movie is built on several highly unlikely scenarios such as a female Saudi doctor who treats men, a Saudi driver/tour guide, a female receptionist, an American with a drinking problem who is not kicked out of the country, etc.Supposedly, the author & the director have both been to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where the story takes place and yet they didn't know something as basic as all of the Embassies are in Riyadh though a lot of countries, including the USA, have Consulates in Jeddah.Most doctors and nurses in Saudi Arabia are foreigners. There are women doctors for women, but it would be extremely unusual for a female doctor to treat a man.It would also be very unusual for a Saudi man to act as a driver and tour guide. Again, foreigners would do such a job.Also, a drunken orgy at the Danish Ambassador's house is extremely unlikely, but apparently Hollywood thought this movie needed sexing up. Open snorting of cocaine is unbelievable.Disclosure: I lived/worked in Riyadh for two years & spent time in Jeddah. Saudi Arabia's culture is very different from the USA's though Americans built or influenced most of the infrastructure so almost all American fast food joints & other businesses are there.The movie did at least hint at how hospitable, polite, and charming Saudis can be

Excellent film. It is very well-done with the story line being one which is quite intriguing. The story is very believable. A middle-aged man who is suffering from anxiety due to the pressures of his life. His struggles lead him to places he never dreamed about and offer him a solution if he is willing to accept it. He does and it becomes quite a tender moment. The reality of the entire situation ever occurring in real life is remote, but one feels the sense of danger he is encountering actually allowing him to be set free, which makes the story more plausible.This film is one of the sleepers we sometimes encounter. Hanks produces and stars in so many films that it is difficult to believe one man can do so much with so little time available. However, he takes with him the qualities, to each film and story, which have made him the finest actor of our time. It is difficult to imagine anyone else in the roles he takes on, and it is equally hard to imagine anyone else producing and/or directing the many films and TV programs he's been involved interwoven with an acting career.Hanks has handled many "sleeper" films in his illustrious career, including the likes of "Cloud Atlas" and "The Green Mile" and "Charlie Wilson's War" among others... all of which are classics and must-see films. "A Hologram For The King" is one of these films.I am sure many people sometimes tire of seeing another Hanks piece in the theaters or on TV, but his work is so bloody good that we should be pleased rather than bored or even upset.This film was actually produced in Germany, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. The scenes in the desert do not depict what the crews and actors underwent in such desolate heat. I've heard it was very tough on them, but they made it through and completed a wonderful film studying the angst and anxieties of a middle-aged man who faces his fears and becomes the man he always wished to be.Congrats to everyone on the production team. It is an excellent film.

Story(3)Das anspruchsvollste Film-Genre ist, meiner Meinung nach, die Komödie. Nichts ist so komplex, wie zu erreichen, dass etwas komisch oder humorvoll ist, ohne gleichzeitig albern oder deplatziert zu wirken.Der deutsche Regisseur Tom Tykwer hat viele Fähigkeiten, besitzt aber leider weder ein Gespür fürs richtige Timing, noch für Situationskomik. So kommt es in diesem Streifen, der eigentlich eine sehr tragische Geschichte einer Midlife-Crisis beschreibt, immer wieder zu hochnotpeinlichen Szenen. Die „Gags“ sind leider nicht nur peinlich, sondern vor allem auch in ihrem Timing schlecht.Die Story um Alan Clay ist äusserst skurril und dramatisch angelegt und hätte somit durchaus grosses Potential für Komik gehabt. Ich ertappte mich immer wieder dabei, wie ich dachte: Was hätten wohl Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch oder die Coen-Brüder aus diesem Stoff gemacht…Tom Hanks bemüht sich redlich, und ihm ist es schlussendlich auch zu verdanken, dass der Streifen nicht völlig versumpft.Richtig gut wird die Geschichte immer dann, wenn sie sich von der eigentlichen Haupthandlung entfernt. Wie zum Beispiel beim Besuch von Yousefs Familie und der nächtlichen Wolfsjagd.Solche Szenen sind aber leider sehr rar, und so bleiben vom Film nur die sehr schönen Landschaftsbilder und die Erkenntnis, dass sich Tom Tykwer offensichtlich keine Sekunde mit der gesellschaftspolitischen Seite Saudi-Arabiens auseinander gesetzt hat.Die sehr behäbige Geschichte bietet mir persönlich zu wenig Lichtblicke, als dass ich sie schlussendlich hätte geniessen können. Einfachste Unterhaltung mit schmalzig-kitschigem Schluss. Etwas mehr hätte den Zuschauern schon zugetraut werden dürfen…Bild (4)Das Bildseitenverhältnis liegt in 2.35:1 (21:9 – Neues CinemaScope (Panavision)) vor.Das Bild macht im Grossen und Ganzen einen sehr guten Eindruck. Die Schärfewerte halten sich, abgesehen von vereinzelten unscharfen Shots, auf einem ansprechenden Niveau. Die Farben wirken recht natürlich, bei Aussenaufnahmen zuweilen etwas überstrahlt.In dunklen Szenen wird das Bild etwas verschluckt. Der Schwarzwert ist zudem nicht ganz auf dem Stand einer aktuellen Produktion. Es ist ein leichtes, aber nicht störendes, Filmkorn zu sehen.Ton(3)Das Tonformat liegt in DTS-HD Master 5.1 vor.Theoretisch, bin ich versucht zu sagen, denn wirklich ausgereizt wird die 5.1-Abmischung weiss Gott nicht. Vielmehr ist die Tonumsetzung ausgesprochen frontlastig. Selbst beim Soundtrack kommen die hinteren Kanäle nur sehr zögerlich zum Einsatz. Bei Umgebungsgeräuschen bleiben sie grösstenteils völlig stumm.Die Dialoge sind jederzeit gut zu verstehen, und die Tonbalance ist ebenfalls gut ausgefallen.Die Tonumsetzung hat noch reichlich Luft nach oben, ist aber Genre-bedingt als gut zu bezeichnen.Extras (2)Es gibt ein etwas lieblos umgesetztes Making-of, ansonsten nichts Interessantes. Ein WendeCover ist vorhanden!Fazit: Obwohl ich sowohl skurrile Filme wie auch Tragikkomödien sehr mag, bin ich bei diesem Streifen nicht auf meine Kosten gekommen. Wem einfache Unterhaltung mit schönen Bildern reicht, könnte hier glücklich werden, alle anderen eher nicht. Von mir gibt es nur eine bedingte Empfehlung…

Der Film zerfällt für mich in 2 Teile. Teil 1 finde ich gut, da wird der Protagonist mit einer ihm fremden Welt und Denkweise konfrontiert. Und wir mit ihm. Teil 2 ist eine Liebesgeschichte, die sehr konventionell erzählt wird und letztlich ziemlich unglaubwürdig daher kommt.

Schöner Film mit Tom Hanks, den vielleicht nicht jeder auf Anhieb mit seinem Namen verbindet. Zwar regt er beim Schauen etwas zum Nachdenken an, ist dabei aber auf keinen Fall "schwere Kost". Für einen gemütlichen Filmabend genau das Richtige!

Tom Hanks bricht Mal wieder alle Erwartungen. Ein Geschäftmann der in Saudi Arabien eine neue Wertschöpfung vermarkten möchte und stößt dabei auf diverse Erreignisse ....
