clamp on the pipes using straps and are secure. not sure if they work or not as there are a lot of questions about the impact but for the cost it is worth a try. Magnets are very strong (don't get your finger caught between them when fitting as they pinch and hold on really tight!)

I live in the South East and the water quality is far from high. Wasn't sure these would work based on reviews from similar magnets but thought I'd chance it due to not being able to install the more expensive electromagnets or full softening systems. Installed 4 around the water meter and 2 under the kitchen sink on the cold pipe. Very very pleased to say that our water tastes noticeably softer, with improved flavour including in tea. Not had time to see build-up differences on the kettle etc. but don't doubt it'll be less.If you're in the South East, combine these with a filter system and you'll not regret it!
