Simultaneously dumbs down and overcomplicates
Most of the book is written well, but the more dry, time-consuming, complicated subjects (*ahem*action potential) are not done well, focusing on mechanisms and little things that aren't key to the big picture. The book is clearly written for a community college audience; it focuses on the sexy-nuts-and-sluts material beloved by the masses that take the classes and the clinicians who teach them. I have more of a problem with the way the content of the book is weighted than the way it's actually written, although that could use some work too. It's a decent text, you can get what you need to learn from it.

The edition was wrong
I was very happy that I found this book for a great price, but when I received it, I found out that it was the wrong edition. It had all the info that I needed but, having the wrong edition # posted was a misrepresentation. Not cool. I won't order from this person again.

Not as advertised
The textbook received did not have the same ISBN number as advertised. The one received was an International edition (such editions are prohibited from being sold on Amazon.com) and was paperback instead of the hardback that was ordered.

Hope the 3rd Ed. is better!
This is a review of the 2nd edition - there is a newer 3rd edition now available from the same author but with a slightly different title. My overall impression of this textbook is not great. Some sections are very basic introductions (equivalent to UK GCSE or A-Level content) others are more detailed and better suited to the 2nd level undergrad course that it is my set text for. There's no consistency between the detail, approach or style in each section - it makes me wonder if each chapter has been written by a different person and then cut and pasted without an editor doing some work to smooth it all together. There are unnecessary diagrams for things that are simple and no diagrams for more complex concepts that would benefit from them. The author repeatedly uses tables to summarize content, but the tables are often missing information and it's not clear why some things are included and others are missed out. The grammar and sentence structure needs better editing to clarify what is being said - almost every sentence could be read in two different ways with different meanings. This is particularly frustrating when it comes to definitions of key terms. Many sections contain contradictory information, leaving the student unclear as to the actual process - this is particularly evident in the paragraphs describing action potentials and neurotransmitters. The review questions at the end are not helpful at all - without model answers or even bullet points to verify that your answers are correct they are just a waste of page space. The layout is confusing and jumps around - it's not clear when a new sub-chapter is beginning, or if a heading is merely an aside from the main flow of the text. There are multiple typos throughout, which is especially confusing when the chapters are mis-numbered.The only thing I liked about this textbook was the learning objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter. If this is the set text for your class, like it is for mine, good luck!
