Easy-to-setup ADSL2+ modem
The ZyXELP660R-F1 is probably the simplest DSL modem that you can buy in terms of setup/configuration. Unlike other modems you do not have to navigate and manually setup VPI/VCI, Encapsulation mode, etc. The modem will autodetect these and all you will need is your PPPoE username and password (Ask your DSL provider if you don't have this info).Firstly, you connect the modem's phone line, Ethernet, & power adapter, switch on and wait a minute for the modem to finish booting. (If you are like most users you'd plug the Ethernet cable into the modem then the other end goes to the WAN port on your WiFi router). All you need to do is attempt to access the internet (any web site) and the modem should prompt you for the modem's login password, your PPPoE username and corresponding password. At that point the modem should login via PPPoE and the Internet should be accessible. That's pretty much it. (Note that your setup could be different depending on your ISP).I am getting slightly better speeds compared to my old modem (nothing major but that's a good sign).THE GOOD:+ Small device, with side & top vents for cooling. I have found most modern devices simply don't have very good cooling. With the side vents you could stand it on the side or at an angle for better cooling (which I recommend doing). Do NOT cover the vents or impede airflow!+ Status LEDs are easy to read at a glance. There are only 4 LEDs (Power, Ethernet, DSL, Internet).+ Powered by a standard 12VDC 1 amp power supply so easy to replace if it fails. Some old DSL modems use weird power supply adapters.+ Status screen shows modem uptime, DSL & LAN status, WAN IP address, etc.+ Supports Dynamic DNS via DynDNS+ Has on/off switch so it is easier to turn on/off than yanking the plug out.THE BAD:- First, the login screen can trip you up. When you access the modem (default 192.168.1.1) you will see a "Login" screen with a password prompt, but it appears that the password prompt is already filled on (i.e. has password dots indicating characters). You can click "Login" without entering a password and you will see the modem's "Status" screen BUT NO OTHER OPTIONS WILL APPEAR. To get the "full" menu options you will need to enter the password at the Login screen, which will bring you to the same "Status" screen but with additional options. Remember, if you need to configure the modem you need to enter the password at the Login screen!- To check DSL line parameters like Signal-to-noise margin, Attenuation etc you need to check under Maintenance/Diagnostic/DSL Line/DSL Line Status. Strangely the upstream/downstream values are not ordered logically (downstream/upstream should be grouped together but they are not). I feel these should have been shown on the status page rather than having to dig deep to find them.- Cooling is still not optimal. The placement of the "main" chip is halfway under the front of the modem's top cover (which has no ventilation!). Also, I feel the chip should have a passive heatsink on it for better heat dissipation and reliability.- Modem has "Windows Networking (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) allow between LAN & WAN" CHECKED by default(!). Recommend unchecking this for security reasons.OVERALL, it is a easy-to-setup DSL modem. It's too early to remark on long-term reliability but I will update this as time goes by.I hope you have found this helpful!

Nice case I love the fact that it can fold all they way back on its self.
I enjoy the case, and I really enjoy the backlit keyboard, I also like the fact that the case can fold all the way back on itself. The one negative I have had in the short few weeks I have had the case is that some of the rubber grippers on the bottom of the case have fallen off. Additionally I have two work colleagues who have the same case and they have both experienced the same problem.

Worked exactly as intended - then failed completely after 20 months
Flawless right out of the box. It comes preconfigured for interconnection with CenturyLink ADSL, which isn't my ISP. However, all I had to do was change one field in the settings screen so that the ZyXEL's VCI code matched what my former DSL modem contained, and of course add the PPPoE credentials for my ADSL subscriber account. (Come to think of it, I also changed the subnet mask of my LAN-facing modem connection to accommodate some downstream equipment I have beyond this modem.)With that done I was off and running, If anything, there was a tiny challenge to intuit that the wizard icon was up on the right hand corner of the modem's home page and that the factory passcode be changed to enter Admin mode to configure and apply changes. The device's Web interface provides significant amounts of information for those inclined to look. One can go so far as to add packet filters or set up a firewall. There are also means to enable syslog and have the log entries streamed to a log server. The chassis never gets overly warm, not any warmer than the ASA firewall which sits beside it. Still, I would be sure this modem has adequate clearance above the unit for suitable heat dissipation. This modem unit has been in operation for me 24/7 over the past 8 months as I finally write my review. I have never needed to restart it or meddle with settings. It just works, which is exactly what I hoped for.POST SCRIPT: I originally rated this product 5-star. It delighted me at first. After a little more than a year I was constantly losing Internet which wouldn't restore until I powered this modem off and on again. At the 20 month service point it simply quit working altogether, and no amount of power resets would bring it back. Feature rich, yes, but durable for the long term - no way!!

Works as described
My old ZyXel router was having power issues so I replaced it with this newer model. Had some issues that took time to resolve but the device was not at fault. I called my DSL provider Earthlink. The tech said he didn't have access to a manual because the device is no longer supported BUT the network was able to communicate intermittently after he tried something on his end. It took me a few days to figure out that my RJ11 (phone) cable was working intermittently. I replaced it with one i had lying around. (The 1 meter cable that came in the box was too short for my setup). I'm happy to say this item works as described.

Economical for me, this is my 3rd unit.
Great for the price, but short-lived. I don't mind replacing them every couple of years and it still keeps me up to date better than buying something I'll have to update eventually anyway. This is my third zyxel and they tend to last only a couple of years, probably due to heat. Possibly installing it where the a/c can blow on it would help, but that's not easy in 99% of cases. Easy setup, easy reset... I live with it.

The good little modem that could
This is a nice modem/router.I intended to use it a pure as a modem as possible, but due that I could not use it in bridge mode because of my ISP, I have to use it in bridge/router mode.It offers some nice features, like DMZ for my dedicated Router and dynamic DNS services updates like DynDNS.The only issue is that as it's in router mode I get frequently "exceeds the max. number of session per host" errors caused by the only torrent client in my network that makes the modem/internet totally unusable, the max limit in this modem is 1024.

No real issues
Had this about a month now and it has had to be power cycled once. Beyond that, no issues.

Disappointed...
Sadly, the product was defective, according to the ISP. Can't say whether it was excellent or not, except that this one couldn't keep the configuration. Waited quite a while for it, so sadly, when it didn't work, it was disappointing.
