Are you a fan of hard, blues-based rock? Then this disc is a MUST OWN!
This live CD is the latest release from the Stoney Curtis Band.Living out here in the Vegas Valley, I have had the luxury of seeing Stoney Curtis play several times, as a part of many groups and events around town. While I am a relative newcomer to his music compared to some of the fans out there, I have almost instantly become a fan of his mix of blues and hard rock. Stoney takes the best of these genres of music, and makes it his own.Since no place online seems to have a Stoney Curtis discography, I can't say for sure what number album this is from him and the group, but he has been going strong, releasing albums for over a decade now. This live release captures him and his band in their element, doing what they do best. I would describe the sound on this CD as a cross between ZZ Top and Robin Trower, and I mean that as an enormous compliment. From start to finish, Stoney's guitar work shines. Many of these songs are extended jams that approach the 10 minute mark, but I guarantee, you will never once be bored or feel like a song is outlasting its welcome. It's one of those discs that grabs your attention and doesn't let go. The disc was recorded in an intimate club setting, with plenty of people in attendance who were clearly fans of the group. Fans of Stoney will not be disappointed. Potential new fans will find this disc to be a great entry point to his music, and will not be disappointed with the purchase. The first pressings on this CD (the first few thousand, I believe) include a live DVD of the performance, which only sweetens the deal, and will definitely be worth it for any fan of the band. The disc itself is a nice bonus, giving you the visuals to go along with this great live release. I found it a little annoying on the DVD the way the screen fades to black to say the name of the song at the beginning of each new one, and the way the copyright info appears for EVERY SINGLE SONG and seems to take its sweet time going away, but that is really a small complaint. Having a DVD version of Stoney and the band at long last is a damn good thing. All in all, fans of hard rock and blues rock will be in heaven with this CD. Stoney Curtis is the master when it comes to what he does, and no place is that truer than on this latest release, featuring the man live and in his element. Five stars all the way. You will not be let down!

Great guitar playing, good songs, not so good vocals...
OK, let the "punishment" in the guise of "unhelpful" votes commence! How DARE I not give this a 5-star review!! OK, kidding aside...Stoney Curtis is a great blues player with a rock edge. His guitar sound is very reminiscient of Robin Trower, and he unleashes a bit of blues-based shredding from time to time for added effect! No complaints there. And the songs are good blues-rock songs. My only real complaint is Stoney's singing. That's where the similarities to Robin Trower really end. Trower hired a vocalist, probably because he can't sing. Stoney's singing sounds pretty good on the opening track, "Last Train To Chicago", But the singing seems to get progressively worse from there. On one of the slow blues songs, he's practically speaking the lyrics, not singing, and it's just kinda boring that way. "Heading For The City" and "Soul Flower" are the weakest of all, vocal-wise. Just sounds amateurish--sorry.And no, I don't think I can do better myself...lol...I'm just describing how it sounds to my ears as an objective listener. In general, I love listening to guitar playing more than the singing in blues rock, but bad singing can still ruin the listening experience, for me. Of course, few great blues-rock guitar players are good singers, anyway, so I guess few people care anymore--unfortunately for me, I'm one of them who does.If you're a Trower fan and don't mind weak vocals, you'll probably like this a lot. Stoney's a great guitarist, I just think he needs to develop more on the vocal side. Now I expect to see "0 of 10 reviewers found the following review helpful" above my review within a week--don't let me down, guys! lol

STONEY ON FIRE!!!!
I've been a Stoney Curtis fan since his raw classic Alive & Unleashed, which turned me on to his playing and tunes.. A great guitarist and songwriter, Alive and Unleashed showed the energy of his playing live.. His 3 studio albums I love as well.. Great tunes (the guy writes great Blues Rock Tunes!) and great playing.. But "Live" reminds me of what I always loved about Stoney.. Energy and ferociousness!.. Stoney kills it on 11 great tracks from his 3 studio albums delivered with such energy and raw power that it leaves you speechless at times... A listen to When The Sweet Turns to Sour left my mouth wide open.. The guy can flat out play the guitar and play some raw blues! Behind the Sun is a tune that reminds me of the great Robin Trower mixed with David Gilmore.. Amazing guitar play at the end.. I could go on and on about how much I love and appreciate this CD and Stoney.. Just buy it.. If you love guitar music, modern Blues Rock, Blues, Rock and even Heavy Metal.. Stoney Curtis Live will satisfy...Get to know one of the most under-rated, under-appreciated American Guitarist out there today.. The DVD is just as good.. It's the same as the CD, but you get to see the show LIVE... 5 stars! A great package!

Good but not his best live album
This is a pretty good CD with a great song selection and great playing. But the overall tone of the album sounds homogenous to me - nothing tends to stand out and the overall sound blends together. His first live album "Alive and Unleashed" is still available as a download and is notibly better IMHO with a more raw feel to it. If you like this disc you'll go crazy over the earlier live album. Stoney rocks and his last studio album "Cosmic Connection" is red hot and a few gems from that masterpiece are on this live album.

Pretty good music
Pretty good music. My main objection is the DVD almost never shows anything except close ups of Stoney playing the guitar. There'snothing wrong with that, but the bass player is never shown. He's really working out on the bass and it would be nice to watch. The onlyreason the drummer is shown is that he's close enough to Stoney to be seen. The whole band should have been shown.

Stoned?
I've never had the opportunity to see this man and his band live - but I have to say that on the evidence here, I must get that opportunity sometime soon!In my recent review of the "LV" album from Chickenfoot, I bemoaned the fact that 4 good musicians were really going through the motions as there was no magic sparkle....well, here on "LIVE" from one Stoney Curtis Band we have sparkle and magic in abundance and if you're quick to purchase this release, not only will you get to hear the man and his guitar but you'll also be able to see him on the bonus DVD. Shrapnel Records, my hat is off to you - and hopefully this (along with the LIVE album from Eric Gales - which coincidentally has the same bass and drum players as the Stoney Curtis Band line up....work that one out - but who cares - both albums are terrific!) will bring more attention to these acts. From the opening lines of The Last Train To Chicago until the close out of this album, Stoney pours his very soul into every note that he wrings from his guitar - sometimes blues, sometimes rock, sometimes acid rock reminiscent of the 70's but all played with such gusto! If you've not given him any listening time, then I can recommend that you start right here and then back track to his studio material simply because while his studio albums are good - they positively shout at you from a live setting!Buy!

Excellent stuff
If you've seen him live, or heard his studio albums, you'll know what to expect and, having seen him a couple of times in the UK, I think this is an excellent representation of his live act. Well worth getting hold of, the earlier the better, as the DVD is apparently limited to the first 3000 copies.
