Freedom to Invent
Of all the classic Doctors Mr. Hargreaves has to come up with tales for, the eighth Doctor is probably the most difficult. With his single appearance there’s not a lot to work with. Still, he manages. In fact, he probably had more freedom to do what he wanted with this one than with any other. He seems to enjoy throwing a few things at us, taking us from cliché high stakes to low stakes fun. It’s a good answer to a problematic doctor.

Splendid!
I hear Paul McGann's voice very slightly but also feel the playfulness... Oh dear, what am I doing? A grown adult reviewing a children's book... 😅

Alien family squabble
The fun merging of the two enjoyable franchises continues with a further four Doctors be given the Mr. Men treatment. This one sees the Eighth Doctor having to deal with a sequence of problems including a rogue computer, a spaceship in peril and a dispute between alien species (all things that the Doctor is more than used to dealing with). It packs a fair bit into such a small story.I wasn’t so sure on the portrayal of the Doctor in this one. But then the Eighth Doctor hasn’t got so many distinctive characteristics to latch onto and his portrayal does seem to waver between the different media (even his two television appearances). It doesn’t help that unlike the other Dr. Men books the caricature doesn’t really have the appearance of the Eighth Doctor so much.It is interesting to note that this story merges ‘classic’ and ‘new Who’ by featuring the new version of the Silurians with the Sea Devils.
