All hail the Queens
Second volume in young adult fantasy romance series 'Twin Crowns.' First book of which was 'Twin Crowns.' There is no exposition to bring new readers up to speed. As ever it had been a while since I read book one, but I don't think I've ever gotten back into a series as quickly as I did with this. Even so, new readers would be far better off starting with book one.Regular ones, read on.This runs for 559 pages. It has sixty two chapters. Which alternate between Rose and Wren as viewpoint character. In the third person. The chapter header does tell you who it is in each.Contains mild violence and very mild horror. As with first book probably best for those aged fourteen and over. After the events of book one, Rose and Wren are queens. But they don't get to live happily ever after just yet. Not everyone in the kingdom is accepting of witches. There's also the matter of Wren's kidnapped grandmother. An ancient curse. And a lost kingdom. Among other things...This didn't quite get going for me till about seventy pages in. The two main characters are together for all those early pages, but it's only when they're off doing separate things that it does rather get going and pick up the pace. So bear with the opening. It does have a lot of plot strands. It weaves them all very well indeed. One new character didn't have quite the depth he possibly could have. And the prose while really good and clear I did find myself rushing at a few points. Some might say this uses tropes. But I hate that word so I won't. There are parts of this that do work so very well indeed. Some very solid character development in one of the girls' story. And even when someone is doing something that might feel ill advised, it does feel character rather than plot driven. Which is good. There are some emotional moments that really are great and did get a reaction out of me. It all builds to a pretty epic climax. With a good surprise or two along the way. It's those bits that really click and worked emotionally that make this a five star read for me. There are sections that are more four star, but those five star bits are so very good. So I am glad I read them. Also, this doesn't feel like a second book in a trilogy. Which is to say some of those just move things along a bit to set up a finale. This is all a natural progression of things, which feels much more realistic. What it does for the third book set up works fine. I did also find myself caring for a fair few of the characters. Which is also nice. Not great literature, and not perfect, but it's nice to have a book like this. That isn't afraid to just spin a good old story with action danger and romance along the way. And do it very well. There is a third book due out shortly which will finish the trilogy. I look forward to it.
