Easy to read, easy to follow
Dr. Furlan made this book easy to read, easy to follow. Her mountain climber is a good visual in goal setting, etc. She even uses quality paper in her book! I encourage readers not to be confused or disheartened regarding the different types of pain described on pages 28 and 29. I believe I have experienced 2 of the 3 and Dr. Furlan mentions that one may and can experience all 3. So don't be tempted to pigeonhole your pain. I almost did. I absolutely recommend this book. Realistic & Empowering
Writing a book about conquering chronic pain is no small feat. It is a complex topic because everyone experiences pain differently, yet there are also common patterns. Chronic pain is a familiar aspect of my life, as I live with a significant amount of physical disability due to a hereditary progressive disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth. Additionally, I have counselled many others dealing with pain through my work and recommend this book often. Dr. Furlan's YouTube videos have been refreshingly practical and helpful, which led me to purchase her book, and I am grateful that I did."8 Steps to Conquer Chronic Pain" is a well-structured and comprehensive book, without being overwhelming. Dr. Furlan's explanation of the pain system, for example, provides a solid foundation for starting your journey toward relief. The book is filled with numerous examples and case studies, and her scientific explanations are presented in a way that is understandable to a layperson. Each of the eight steps highlighted in the book offers valuable insights into managing your pain. What personally resonated with me about Dr. Furlan's approach is her emphasis on avoiding medication as the first go-to solution, which sets her apart from many other physicians. Medication is certainly a crucial component when necessary, but it's just one piece of the overall puzzle. The book also explores steps such as becoming more aware of your thought patterns, addressing your dietary choices, evaluating your daily habits, and seeking support from others when needed – all of which contribute to your experience of pain. The focus here is on the elements within your control. It's easy to feel disempowered when pain is a constant companion, but this book serves as a guide to remind you to take charge of the contributing factors as best as you can. In my opinion, this book provides valuable direction toward a more manageable and, hopefully, less painful destination.
