Wow! Fit and function surpassed all my expectations!
Shoes are a tricky thing for me, and for most people probably. I have sensitive feet in that every time I purchase a new pair I will inevitably end up getting blisters somewhere, whether it be on the bottom of my foot, the back of my heel, or the top of my toes. I know this going in. I always purchase higher-quality shoes. Comfort and durability are what I care about. I've tried various good brands - and been very happy with many of them. These shoes though - they stand above all the others I have tried.I had no prior knowledge of these shoes going in - I just came across them and liked the style. I already trust the brand - I have owned a pair of Merrell hiking boots before and they were very good. Deciding to give these a shot, I chose the red, which is a shade I very much like, and hoped that they would be a good, versatile shoe. I have worn them for half a year now and they are excellent. The soles are thick enough for hiking. Some shoes have soles a little too thin so that jagged rocks or uneven surfaces become a nuisance, but these handle everything well. They are not as thick as a hiking boot, but that's good. I want versatility. Hiking boots tend to be very stiff and not as conducive for everyday wear. These are flexible. They're comfortable to walk in so I wear them all of the time. They have an element of stiffness, but without the cumbersome rigidity of many other types of shoes. Also, somehow I have never gotten a single blister with these shoes. This is the first time I could ever say that about a new pair. I would not hold it against them if I did get some blisters, but I just simply haven't. The fit for me is incredible. They are snug and secure in every way while still affording my toes and sides of my feet the perfect amount of room and cushion to operate properly. I suppose many think that this is what should be expected of a shoe. Well, maybe, but I haven't found it for myself until now. The proportions are perfect.I use these shoes for everyday wear, hiking, and walking construction sites sometimes when my job requires it. I wear them in all types of conditions including flat, hilly, dirty, rocky, and wet terrains. The fabric is easy to keep clean and the tread has not unduly worn down. These will last me for a long, long time to come. Also, I have experienced with other shoes premature separating of the sole from the upper, whether it be on the front by the toes, or at the back by the heel. No such separation has occurred with these. I am impressed with the manufacturing quality.Because I have never found the "perfect" shoe for my feet before I always try new or different brands when trying replacements. However, after experiencing the fit and feel of these I know I will absolutely buy these again whenever that time should come. I don't take for granted the fact that these shoes are blister-free, incredibly comfortable, versatile, and durable. Granted - they aren't "perfect" for me as far as their aesthetics. I love the red color, but the gray piping all over the toe and sides is something I would change if I had the capability of doing so. That small quibble aside, I never expected to find shoes that I like this much. Everyone's feet and needs are different, but I confidently recommend giving these a try. 5 stars easily!

an excellent walking/hiking/workout shoe
My wife has been a life long Merrell fanatic and I finally gave in and bought my first pair. I have to say I am over the moon with this shoe/sneaker/boot and I now use it for everything related to training and working out. Specifically, I use it with my indoor bike trainer as well as my outdoor MTB; I use it on the treadmill as well as walking outdoors; I use it on my elliptical; I use it when I weight train. In all these activities this is without a doubt the best shoe/sneaker/boot I've ever owned. What makes it great: the cushion of the shoes molded sole; the molded insert; the overall design which is neither too tight, or too loose and generally adjusts with your foot as it gets swollen when hot and active and last but not least the outstanding grip that works fantastic for all the activities I listed. Price can vary wildly depending on model, but I am confident there are good reasons for that - I highly recommend this shoe.

No break-in period was awesome!
OK, here's the deal. These are "trail running" shoes for which I paid $35. To me, "trail running" means half sneaker of some type but with a rugged sole. Do I have odd feet? Well, I wear anywhere from a 10.5 to 13, but mostly 12 seems to be the most common footwear for me. I got a 12D in these, and I think the fit is just about perfect. They have the same Vibram sole that the Columbias I bought last year for the same terrain have. I wore these around for a day or to, but then took them on an off-trail 4-5 hour trek into the Red Rock Canyon in Vegas. Zero discomfort problems. No blisters, no soreness anywhere on the foot, no unusual muscle issues outside of the foot (sometimes a bad or unbroken-in shoe can really mess with your leg or even back muscles). And even though I was picking my own route up the mountain, I didn't feel any lack of heel/ankle support that a mid-rise might offer, or have worries due to the footwear I had on. Overall, they are just a really comfortable, lightweight hiking shoe.

Light and Comfortable, Durability Concerns
These shoes are light and comfortable and are quite similar to the Merrell Moab Ventilators that I just retired. The toe box seems a little roomier, which is welcome because my one complaint about the Ventilators was that the toe box was a little tight, causing my toes to take some abuse during sustained downhill walking. My only reservation about these is that the overlay material is very thin, looks like some kind of rubberized synthetic, but it is only perhaps 10 mils thick. At first glance you might mistake, as I did, the cosmetic black shadow graphic as a real shadow and think that the top layer is actually much thicker than it is. I am concerned that the abrasion of actually hiking in them will shred the top layer. So the jury is out on these until I get the chance to put some miles on them and see how they hold up.

Great purchase, super comfortable
I took a chance and bought these without trying them on, and absolutely love them. Right out of the box they were comfortable and I was able to hike in them for a few days in a row with perfect comfort. The arch support is definitely present, in the right place, but not uncomfortable. The sole is extremely grippy; I was able to do a lot of rock-hopping/light bouldering with confidence. For reference, I wear a women's 10.5, and either a 41 N in Birkenstocks or a 42.5 in cycling shoes. I ordered the men's 9.5 and they're perfect. A friend of mine who wears either a 9 or 9.5 tried them on and decided to buy the 9. They definitely don't run small. I always have to buy men's athletic shoes because I have fairly large bunions and a women's toe box is too narrow. I'm able to snug up the laces in the midfoot and forefoot to make those sections fit more closely.
