An ideal overview
Being curious about Chinese furniture in general, I was gratified to find this volume illustrated with large color photos and informative text (happily devoid of Scolarspeak and the usual unruly mob of experts shoving for attention). I'm not sure that brushpots count as furniture, but not to include them would have been a major loss. Pieces illustrated fall along the spectrum from being truly innovative and breattaking and following the dots in an impeccable way. But that's true of any tug of war between creator and patron. The book's only major shortcoming is choosing period woodcuts line and drawings and then re-drawing them (rather clumsily!), apparently to enhance reproduction or spare the cost of additional halftones. But this Procrustean simplification deprives the reader of any number of fascinating details, not to mention of comparing period styles!
