Surprisingly different. And excellent as well.
Now this is completely different from any other camelbak I've ever had. I've had a rim runner (older, +/- 2003), hawg 2003 +/-, and hawg 2016. My last hawg is my current biking pack. Is excellent.Wore it on a small hike today and I liked it. Was totally skeptical at first in boxing.First noticed it has no organizer pocket. No biggie since it has a ton of other pockets. The 2 big belt pockets, and shoulder strap pockets make up for this easy. Not to mention the 2 pockets on the front of the pack. And also the 2 pockets uncovered when u expand the pack. Plenty. Is a lightweight daypack. An athletic type pack. Maybe with trail running in mind? Is excellent for hiking and walking also. My intended use is hiking. Walking I guess too. Can easily fit some extra layers/clothing. Headlamp, flashlight, dog mace, paper towels to poo in the woods, snacks, all that. Pack expands nicely. Zip cinch front is nice. Works well. Can also carry some Sandles/river shoes for water crossings. Is pretty versatile. Roomy. Is totally a spring/summer/fall pack. Not a winter pack. Not insulated. Also has no rain fly. And is not water proof or resistant. Although camelbak may make one for it?? Not sure.At any rate is a fair weather lightweight day pack. Excels at trail running and hiking. Lots of pockets.

Fantastic pack
Great pack. Much better than the older version of this pack. The hip pockets are nice and roomy (more so than older version). Has a nice pocket on one of the shoulder straps that expands a bit to fit larger items (not available on older version). I like the fact that the center zipper can be unzipped to allow the pack to expand its capacity. Zip it up and the pack is more compact. The new bladder and bite valve are fine. I don’t notice anything necessarily better about this new version. But the improvements made to the pack are huge.

A cautious recommendation
This is advertised as a running pack but my use of it has also involved hiking, climbing and MTB’ing in around 60-90F. For this it had preformed admirably and earned itself a cautious recommendation. As with any backpack of this weight and size it wants to be worn high, almost on the shoulders, and the waist belt straps, thin as they are, don't do much more then hold the pack to your body while running. They offer no substantial support, and the pockets are not that easy to get to while on the move anyhow. There are 4 (mirrored ) exit holes through which to route your hydration tube: 2 on the side for underhand routing and 2 on the shoulder straps for overhead reach. This is excellent for MTB’ing and climbing but less excellent for keeping rain water out. The hole’s are not blocked, as they are on other packs, and so rain water will get into the hydration pocket (not the main compartment .) There is a small hole for the water to drip out of but it’s not ideal considering that otherwise the back is somewhat waterproof. The back zip up thing, the mesh ‘expandable cargo capacity‘ pocket is pathetically small and wont fit a medium sized jacket let alone a cycling helmet as I hoped it would (it’s also not exactly stretchy). What it does however is zip up with the back when half empty and stops it from having that sad deflated look backpacks can sometimes have. The space offered up when unzipped is considerable, my guess is 3 L or so, and overall, the whole back fits much more then you’d expect; though the small keys and sunglasses sized compartment wont actually fit my glass and can barely fit my phone. The 2 shoulder strapped front-facing slots are terrific and so are the shoulder straps themselves. God knows how long they’ll last, but they actually breathe.Lastly, the color is worth a note.I ordered the discounted lime variant which looks, at least on the Amazon pictures, almost Neon. This is likely a lighting thing because unlike the older CamelBak’s which really were ostentatiously yellow the new martial is much more sensible and closer to lime - green. While It lacks attachment loops, which admittedly makes it good climbing, and the chest strap does loosen up while in full sprint, this is now my main sports pack so it is doing the rest of it right. it’s not worth 120$ but for 60- i’d give it look.

it has many compartments! lots of opportunities carry external stuff including trekking poles
Excellent capacity to weight ratio! Tested in the extreme conditions of Nepal, up to 4300m and aside from a frozen drinking tube, the bag performed amazingly.

The hip pockets are great and the new shoulder straps breathe like a dream
The Octane feels as if it custom tailors to my needs. It is sleek and compact when the center zipper is "zipped." BUT it can be unzipped to provide much more room. The hip pockets are great and the new shoulder straps breathe like a dream.

Great Pak!
I really like this Camelbak. I had one before but I lost it. I bought this mainly to use for my upcoming Tough Mudder in a couple months. This one has the biggest bladder (3L) and for the price from Amazon Deals, I could not resist. It has two cell phone pockets that fit my iPhone X that has a Lifeproof Fre case on it. They zip up on the bottom strap. It has plenty of room to put snacks/granola bars, probably underwear, a change of clothes maybe a pair of vibrams. With the bladder full of water, the bag did not fully inflate like in the picture. I wore this while playing Dance Dance Revolution and to be honest, it works well. The only con I have is the clip that holds the water hose could be designed better. The hose did fall off once but i think it should have a bigger bend to hold the hose better.

Great Runnijg Vest
This is a very comfortable vest which I’ve now worn on a number of long runs. I’ve not had any issues with the best which provides plenty of storage space.
