Disturbing, but has to be read
I'll try not to repeat the previous reviewers' views, i agree with them, but i just have to add some point worth mentioning, namely that the book also covers what happened post-WW2. The cover-up of the Japanese war criminals by the US's government, the very successful civilian life of the Japanese war criminals in the Japanese pharmaceutical companies and several health related government positions. It also illustrates quite well that the complete lack of ethics was carried over to the Japanese government, with several horror stories of involuntary (en mass) inoculation of experimental vaccines on Japanese children, without the consent or knowledge of their parents. Also included is the relationship between the US's biological (and chemical) weapons program and institutes and some of these Japanese "researchers". Quite frankly the sadistic excesses of some of these Japanese "researchers" somehow manage to surpass Nazi excesses, and the book goes to quite an extent in illustrating all this. I somehow expected more detail in the Unit 731 and Unit 100 activities, but looking back, i'm not sure anyone wants to know all the details. The scientific data is relatively accurate, describing strains used in the "marutas", as well as the experiments carried post WW2 on the unsuspecting Japanese (and US's) population. The book also covers other units active in Manchuria, dealing with "veterinary research", and crop destroying agents.Overall, a well balanced, well researched book. Much of the information remains classified, but if you're interested in the topic, then this book is mandatory, and full of shocking revelations. Disturbing, but has to be read. It's not the ultimate reference, you'll have several unanswered questions after reading this book, but it does a good job in answering what it can and pointing some directions for further research. Highly recommended, but brace yourself for some disturbing read.

volledig, onderzocht, schokkende waarheden
