Pro Tools 9: Music Production, Recording, Editing, and Mixing

Not the best for beginners, but after the basics...
This book is very good to learn preferences and settings and how to make the most out of your pro tools session; however, it is not the best for beginners to learn how to do things from the get-go. There are no steps to learn why or to start from the ground floor, also the illustrations aren't the most specific. That aside, I feel that this book is definitely dedicated to the intermediate/advanced users and think it will be a great reference tool after I am more familiar with the basics, as the book is well written and very detailed.

High Level, Abstract Only
I've been running Pro Tools 9 on a Windows 7/64 Platform for almost a year. I bought this book as a user's manual for my DAW.This book doesn't begin to fill that role.It reads like a "See Spot Run" reading primer. There's virtually no detail on how to set up your DAW. There's no troubleshooting, not even for common PT issues. No explanation for I/O. The paragraphs on latency are laughable. There's no useful index. Try searching for information through the table of contents? Well, good luck with that, too. Also, as you browse the book, the pages don't tell you which section of the book you're in. Not a chapter. Not a sub-chapter.This book is useless.I can't decide whether the author honestly doesn't know Pro Tools or is just lazy and out for a quick buck. Seriously, anyone watching YouTube could have written this book just by taking notes.Don't waste your hard-earned money on this piece of trash.

Decent add on book....
This is a great "how to" book for navigating Pro Tools 9, especially for those that are new to PT.....

Awful!
Don't waste your money. First of all this is pretty much for Mac only. Not well organized and doesn't cover anything other than the very basics. Does not even cover plugins. Returned it immediately and swapped it for Pro Tools 9 Ignite which is way better organized and is more intuitive AND is less expensive.

One of the Good Ones ~ A Wet Read
There are many books out on Pro Tools 9 and due to the complexity of the DAW software there are many approaches to using it. So my recommendation is to get as many different good books on the subject as possible. Only by looking at it through several different engineers eyes will you get a comprehensive education of the potential of this incredible application. I started out with Pro Tools 101 Official Courseware, Version 9.0 which although it is beneficial to a beginner and is "the" AVID training course step 1, I found it to be a dry read, notwithstanding a great resource of information; so I am not damning the book.I also have Pro Tools 9: The Mixer's Toolkit: The Mixer's Toolkit which is another recommended book on the subject, my full review is available on that product page.Thirdly there is one book that is a must read, and it is not really on Pro Tools 9 specifically, but rather a general treatise on all the DAW app's and that is Mixing Secrets for the small studio In there you will see not where the button is to do something in Pro Tools, or any app, but rather know how to use it. Let me use an analogy. A technical manual which is what most of them are will tell you where the brake pedal is, but they don't normally tell you about how to apply more pressure when coming to a stop, feathering just the right amount for how quickly you want to stop, and then letting up on the pressure at the last second so as to not jolt everyone in the car. Mixing Secrets is all about "how" to work the pedal, not where it is located. They are all great books, and PT9 by Mike Collins is one of my favorites. Why? Because he is more than an experienced studio engineer, he is also an accomplished musician. Although it is a technical manual on how to use the app his from the ground up experience foretells of an approach that is logical, and fundamental to building the landscape of finished recording project. Everything is logical and well thought out.As the author states this book is not designed to be an entry level text. He does however provide lengthy explanations of what some experienced professionals may consider basic, and advises them to feel free to skip ahead in those sections. So paired with some familiarity with PT9, or 8, or transitioning from other apps such as Logic this book will get you up to speed with PT9 quickly.Overall I found it an enjoyable read. I especially like it when he explains that, "If you are really determined to be the fastest Pro Tools operator around, you will have to eat, sleep, and breathe Pro Tools until you have learned as many of the keyboard commands as you can remember, and get as much varied experience of recording as possible." So this book is by no means a dry read, but rather just the right mix of explaining the functions and how to do each process along the way, and a writing style that makes it an enjoyable and "wet" read. Highly recommended.

Broad book on the key features of Pro Tools to help you record.
If you don't know anything about DAW (digital audio workstation) which allow you to set up a home studio to record music, get another book. This is for using Pro Tools. The book covers the basics of how to use Pro Tools to record, edit and mix. It feels like it should be a beginner's book, but I can't imagine a complete newbie able to get through this unless s/he spends some time tinkering around with Pro Tools. While the book doesn't delve into the advanced, nitty-gritty features like getting the best recording of an instrument to mix, that's not that this book is for. This is to get you to a novice level. The book is filled with colorful diagrams. Also, Pro Tools works in both Mac and PC, so you have to tolerate the differences in lingo, like "command" vs. "control." It'd be more confusing for PC users who are working with window of Pro Tools in Windows, but I can't blame the author for that. Maybe releasing a separate Mac version and a PC version of the book could have made the flow easier to digest. As always, take your own notes of the features and functions you want to use the most - I always recommend people to compile the keyboard shortcuts. This book does a satisfactory job of explaining the basics of a very powerful DAW.
