Price Spike?
Major DOWN-GRADE--I'm not a heavy user but I sure liked this thing until it quit! After only a few months of light use I noted that at first, some bags did not remain "air-tight"? Then soon nothing would stay air-tight? I've never had on of these things so I thought I'd try another brand of bag but soon figured out that there was a slight bump in the heating/sealing tract that would cause a "burn through" small but enough that this thing is no longer of any use. I went to the Rival web site and noted it was under warranty, however, buyer pays shipping both ways AND you must ask them to give you the shipping cost and send it with the unit for repair. I sent an email as directed about a week ago and have heard nothing? Since the purchase was for about $45 it's probably really not worth my time anyway. So even though I like a Vacuum Sealer unless Rival makes a better offer the next one probably won't be from them.If money was no object--well I got this same unit from Amazon for about $43 a month ago? They have a newer version but I went with this one as it was a (bit?) cheaper and had a lot more bags. 4 rolls of plastic and a bag-o-bags. That said to me it's a great unit for under $50. I've been considering one for sometime now. It does what it suppose to. I've not had any problems when we go to places like Sam's we can buy that chunk of cheese cut it in a smaller portion for us and "shrink" the rest. Same with meats in the market if something is on special. It does take some force to latch but that seems to be the norm. The only complaint I have is it is very noisy to run. It's not a commercial unit but works out very well for moderate to light home use still $70 is too much.

Customer Service Is This Sealer's Downfall
We recommended this food sealer to many friends and relatives, before it developed a glitch. After a short time, the sealer started turning off before the food saver bags were fully suctioned. It was necessary to unplug it and plug it back in to get it going again. As time went on, the problem became worse and worse. After receiving no replies to our contacts to Rival (2 to the 800 number and 1 via email), we tossed it and replaced it with another, more expensive brand. Rival's customer service is non-existent, so do not take a chance with buying any of their products. If it should break, you are on your own.

Great gadget for freezing foods
I purchased this item because I wanted to take advantage of freezing foods (bulk meats and fresh garden vegetables) without the hassle and waste of freezer burn. I am amazed at the power of this machine.... it removes every single bubble of air from the package. It does require that you use a little bit of force to get the sealer to snap shut, and it does feel and look as if you could break it in the process. However, that is not the case. Quite a bit of pressure is required. The instruction booklet comes with lots of hints on getting the most from the machine, especially with softer foods and those containing liquids. Overall excellent quality.

Not worth any money
It is impossible for me to close the unit on the right side. I will not return it for fear it will get sold to somebody else that way. Sorry, it's going in the trash. To make matters worse, none of the bags I sealed stayed that way and have air in them.

Did not work as advertised, doesn't hold a seal.
We have had several vacuum sealers, FoodSaver brand, from entry leave to top of the line and we love them, use them for may different things. We bought this to do some of the none food storage things we vacuum seal, primarily to save the $300 vac sealer from over work. Well, got to tell ya, this is a piece of junk. It doesn't seal air tight, might as well use zip lock bags. Didn't come with bags either, a real waste of time and money. But what they say is true, you get what you pay for.

Best Brand Food Sealer
I've had two Food Saver brand vacuum food sealers in three years. When my second one went out less than a year after I got it, I decided I needed to find a better brand. I purchased a Black and Decker. Couldn't even get it to seal the bags. So it went back. Finally, I found this Rival. I love it! It seals even better than my Food Saver! I really like how it has the automatic seal button. The food saver only offers this feature on its more expensive models. The cheap price is icing on the cake. I would definitely recommend this! Actually, I'm buying this for two family members for Christmas gifts!

The unit is suppose to automatically seal after removing all ...
The unit is suppose to automatically seal after removing all the air. It doesn't. You have to manually press the seal button. A minor inconvience.

Great Machine!
This is probably the best food sealer on the market today. I think I probably had one of the 1st Seal-a-Meal's made in the 1970's, and although I love it, this one is 100 time better. The only slight drawback is that it requires quite a bit of pressure to snap it closed, and then a lot to open it again. Other than that, it does a great job of sucking all the air out of the bag, and sealing it tight. I can store many more Seal-a-Meal bags in the freezer than I can freezing the same food in containers.
