Beware of only 1 sound at a time if
you wish to play directly standalone with a midi keyboardaccording to Roland JP,you only get the 16 tones, sounds, etc... IFyou use software, and have this sound box connected tocomputer.WHY then, is my question do we need an external soundboxlimited to 1000 sounds ( remember you are lucky if you findeven 200 use able for you )when, IF you are computer connected and using softwareWHY THE HECK NOT Simply use software soundsgalore !no use for me. this thing should reincarnate as softwareduhhh

Nice little unit, minor quibbles aside
For a simple little device to take around with your laptop to work on musical ideas I'm sure this will work well enough, especially considering it can work as an audio interface for a microphone for example.I've not fully worked through all the features, but have used it as a mobile sound source, and it has worked well enough for me to think the purchase worthwhile, though not well enough for me to wonder "what if I'd gone another direction" in assembling a cheap small "mobile" rig. It has done its job though and provided a usable piano sound "on the go" hooked to my controller keyboard which was sadly missing from what I'd been using for a couple of weeks before getting the SD-50.Couple of quibbles though... The package includes a printed manual as well as a separate CD containing said printed manual in addition to the driver/software CD. The manual makes reference to a separate "tone list" PDF rather than have the available sounds listed in the manual. This did not seem to be included anywhere, but I did find it on the Roland web site. From a technical point of view, I did notice the stereo "line outs" were somewhat annoyingly RCA Phono based (i.e. typical HiFi style connections) and very quiet, requiring a much higher volume than other inputs. The unit does have a software based "gain" but raising this up often results in a very digital "clipping" sort of distortion. It was also somewhat disappointing to not have the ability for a mono output. Personally I have somewhat "solved" both these issues using a simple and tiny 4 in 1 out mixer which mixes the stereo and adds gain in the process, though I'm still pushing the output amp more than I would normally.
