Perfect for home or small business
**This review is for the pricey 8-port 10Gb switch**I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase this switch. My challenge was that my NAS, router, and PC did not support SFP and almost all competing 10Gbe switches rely on SFP uplink. I wanted at least 8 ports @ 10Gb speeds without breaking the bank. Few switches in this price range offer only "pure" RJ-45 copper links. Right now I am only using 5 of the 8 ports (lagg 2 to router, lagg 2 to NAS, 1 to desktop) but it's nice to have additional ports if I decide to expand my home network. This product is literally plug-and-plug with minimal configuration required from the interface (a separate console port is provided for old-school technicians). In less than 5 minutes I had LACP aggregation setup between my NAS and the switch. So far I've had zero downtime or erroneous reboots. This switch does have fan(s) that is noticeable from time to time, so I recommend locating the device to a separate room or closet away from the computer(s) location. My only complaint is that the web GUI does not seem fully compatible with Google Chrome. Some menus appear blank and clicking around navigation does not function. This shouldn't be a big deal for most people since many enterprises default to Internet Explorer. Nevertheless, this is the only switch interface I've used that has not been compatible with Chrome, and at the price I felt this should be mentioned. Firmware updates are few and far between, but I hope TRENDnet adopts the proactive approach like many other network device manufacturers to incorporate new features and eliminate issues such as the browser incompatibility mentioned above.

updated version is awesome for the price
I owned the previous version of this switch, the one without the SFP+ ports and without https support. Loved it. Decided to upgrade to get the SFP+ ports. This does all the basic stuff you want for home/small office use (802.1q VLANs and other basic management). It is also fairly quiet (though it does have a fan, it is quieter than rack mount switches). The added SFP+ ports are very useful - I've started converting over to OS2 to connect between floors and DAC cables to connect to other nearby switches, so the SFP+ ports convinced me to upgrade. The web management is also improved since the prior model, adding GVRP to make propagating VLAN changes easier and also explicit ingress filtering options. (And https, though no way to set your own certificate.)And on top of all that, this unit is NDAA compliant. I am a bit paranoid about potentially untrustworthy chips in my network gear, that if the option exists w/o being overly expensive, I would choose NDAA compliant units.

Switch Saves Power even though it's disabled!!
I bought this switch for the 10GB transfer speeds. Even though IEEE 802.3az EEE power saving is disabled the thing turns off the NIC Card!! Not convenient for a DNLA Media server takes 20 sec to see the server in the clients. NOT HAPPY AT ALL FOR WHAT IT COSTS!!! I DON"T CARE ABOUT SAVING POWER!!!

Great switch, with 1 caveat...
This is an extremely economical option if you need to add 10GbE to your home or small business network.Personally, I think the best use cases for this switch are for home networks and/or an inexpensive backend for something like VMWare VMotion...or something not connected to your managed switch/client-facing production network. Why? See below. You will almost inevitably have loop issues if you try to use this switch on a network involving managed switches. I was silly enough to try it, and recorded 29000+ network topology changes in a couple of weeks. For the unfamiliar, that’s entirely too many topology changes in such a short span, and is an indicator that something is very wrong. It was causing dropped and ghost calls on our VoIP (BPDU issue) network, and absolutely sucked to chase down. Finally figured it out, pulled the switch off, and as if by magic, everything was in harmony again. I tested it on my home network just to confirm, and yes, it happens there too. This switch absolutely fights to be the “core” switch, and that causes myriad issues (aforementioned VoIP issues, DNS resolution timeouts, randomly dropping internet...pull the switch off, all symptoms disappear).Get a managed switch if you need this to be on a production type of network. If your purpose is a few wired connection at home or a vMotion style management network, you’ve found quite a good deal.

Noticeable in network traffic for our VMware environment.
Adding this switch improved our environment in many ways. Our Nakivo jobs run 10x faster. Moving large files takes less time now. Most importantly, I feel confident about hosting vm's on our external NAS with no concern that there will be performance issues due to the network pipe. The only thing slowing me down now is Spindled discs. Next upgrade, SSD's!

Seems to reliably drop connections
I bought this to put some 10G NAS devices onto a faster segment, but I find this switch keeps "locking up".If I reboot the switch: ., connectivity to the switch (ping/http) and my NAS devices comes back.Switch has the latest firmware 1.01.04, and I'm using CAT7 patch cables....and switch is plugged into a UPS.I had LACP enabled, but killed it in case it was causing the drops. No improvement.I'm presently awaiting a support callback, will see come out of it.

Works well under constant traffic
I kept all 8 ports going for a couple of weeks, 5 of them at 10GbE speed, the others at 1Gbit speeds, constantly transferring data through it to a new QNAP TS-1677X and this switch handled it flawlessly. Heat dissipation was good compared to other brand's switches I tried.

And its discontinued..... but it works
Nothing like buying it brand new 10/21, and finding a day after you purchased it, it was discontinued. I hope they update the product listing to state this!Pro: Its smart switch with a big pipe, QoS, Vlans and other value added network features....Cons:Fans suck (and blow) rather noisily,Price for what you get its almost $100 per port! (CDN),you get a very bright LEDs even when nothing is plugged in!
