Shahnameh is a beautiful book, but in literary style closer to The Hobbit than Lord of The Rings
This version of Shahnameh covers the mythical account of the Persian Kings of the Achaemenid dynasty. It therefore covers 2/3 of the length of the standard account in Shahnameh, omitting the Sassanid kings, from the beginning of the story to the the death of Rostam. The book is a hardcover book, with a book slip but no dust jacket. The text and images is printed onto thick, glossy paper, and the effect can only be described as luscious. The text itself is of a style more similar to King Arthur, or The Hobbit. It lacks the literary quality of a modern classic like Lord of the Rings. The end result, for better or worse, is a bit like a 'coffee table' book. All the same, it is a nice bit of Iranian culture, made accessible to a British audience.

Stunningly beautiful version of the Shahnameh
This is the most beautiful book which I have owned, though of course there are finer in museums. The illustrations are copious, elegant and delightful. For me it is the perfect version that I can imagine of this classic. I am grateful to have discovered it and in awe of its magnificent design. It is superbly presented as a hard back book, within a protective hard case. This emphasises the importance of the Shahnameh as a chronicle of Persian civilisations over the centuries and Persia's vital importance in the geography, history, and culture of this part of the world.

Epic indeed
At first brief browse, we love the vibrant, collaged illustrations and will enjoy the very readable retelling as we get to know the work better. The sturdy slipcase had suffered denting/creasing in 3 places (Amazon please note re packing!) which would have been more of a problem if bought as a gift. The slip case had done its job, though, and the book is fine.

In one word-MAGNIFICENT
When I opened the package I was VERY pleasantly surprised. 100% recommend this book. They have translated it beautifully with gorgeous drawings and hard cover, and definitely worth the price and even more!!! Could not recommend this enough. I already read the Farsi version while growing up, so I can't wait to read this amazing translation!!

A masterpiece
The value of this book is not only in its written words but also in its beautiful illustrations. The artist has masterfully blended various painting styles to represent the images they wanted. The translation is also well done and accessible for all readers.

The most amazing writer story of the kings specifically for kids and young adults who don’t speak English .It had been closely described to the actual poems of ferdosi and the illustrations is breathtaking! My kids love listening to the stories and they say : “it’s even better than lord of the rings mummy!!
